I was having a similar problem in school. I was a secondary education major in mathematics. I was accepted to the college of education and finished all the required classes for the education portion, the only problem I had was when it came to calculus III. I could understand the material but couldn’t memories the basis of the equations. So I had to reassess my goals in the university system. Besides what I really wanted to do was help people with disabilities in all aspects of society, not only in lower grades k-12 but also help people in college, on into their jobs, and society. My other goal was to just graduate Form College and get my degree and be able to apply it to something I would like doing. So I what I did was go to a counselor that I could trust to help me or at least point me in the right direction. I got hooked up with the department of Inter Disciplinary Studies. It is kind of a generic department, under bachelors of arts, where people go who don’t fit into a program that the university has to offer. What I can do under Inter Disciplinary Studies is make my own major. I get to choose classes that are interesting to what I want to do and I also graduate faster. Not only that my counselor is one of the best and is very helpful and understanding of my situation. These people work with all types of unconventional majors. For instance at my university there is no program for woman’s studies, there is also no undergraduates degree for education psychology. I think a lot of people don’t use the recourses of the university to their advantage. I think everyone should check into what accommodations colleges have as a person with a disability. It is also mandated by federal law that state colleges and universities accommodate people with disabilities.
