The Old Quarry's Secret: How Asmoudeous Came to Mossflower

When a mousemaid and an Abbey schoolteacher venture too far into the place where Redwall's stone was taken, they awaken a monster who will be known as poisonteeth for years to come...

Part I: The Bricks of the Foundations

"The first Redwallers labored at this very spot." Brother Brio guided the young doormouse to a gigantic cave at the other end. It was red, a rusty, beautiful red. Kari looked at the vast tunnels leading down. The young mouse gasped.
"Yes, it is gigantic, and all of that was done to create our Abbey. Imagine if you will hot, tired woodlanders, laboring hard under the sun. They carry giant blocks of sandstone on their backs, bent low to support the stone. Martin the Warrior stood here." he pointed to a groove in the cave walls. "He surveyed the work. Touch the blocks of sandstone, cut off to build our Abbey. It is living history. The quarry will always be here."
"Forever?" Kari touched the rough edges where the chisels had done their work, careful not to press to hard.
"Forever." the school brother smiled.
Brio was an old, aging mouse with tan-colored fur and a small goatee. His gray habit was wrapped tight around him as the steady breeze blew through the Abbey. His stundent Kari wore a green dress, paterned with four-leaf clovers. Brio had taken a liking to the mousemaid.
"Do you want to go deeper?" he asked as she tugged at his habit. "What is it, little one?"
"What's that?" she asked, looking at an indent in the walls.
"That is where the sword of Martin the Warrior did the work that tools could not." Brio explained. She looked at that part in awe.
"I want to go farther in."

Kari clung tightly to the Brother's habit as they spiraled through the passageways. It got darker and darker, and the walls narrowed. There were forks in the road, on which Brio backtracked their journey in his head than took a path. He seemed to know the quarry like the back of his paw.
Then, they reached a dead end. Softly, Brio whispered:
"Here they had all the block they needed, little one."
"Is this the end of our journey?"
Brio smiled, his eyes twinkling.
"Oh my, no."
"Where to go but back?"
Brio felt around the stone wall. He pressed and pushed, rubbing his fur against it and spitting on the stone. Finally, he found the part he was looking for.
"Cling to my legs. Whatever you do, don't let go."
With suprising stregnth rare in one his age, Brio pushed hard on the stone. He threw his weight against it, and the wall swung, revealing a small cliff with a giant fall.
But Brio had misjudged his effort. Pushing altogether to hard, he found himself tompling over the edge, Kari still clinging to his legs.

More coming up!
