The Old Quarry's Secret: How Asmodeous Came to Mossflower
Part II: The Reeds of the Cave
Kari opened her almond-shaped eyes and let go of Brio's legs. The fall was emense; about ten feet or so, and to a young mouse, that was forever. She had closed her eyes tightly when they went, but now, as she opened them, wanted to scream.
They were in total darkness. Nothing like the dim light that shone through the passageways, but real, raven black. It was as if there was nothing.
Kari tried to feel around with her paw, to find something. When she jerked it, a white hot pain shot into her arm, as if thousands of daggers were pressing into her flesh.
The agonizing cry of the infant woke Brio up. He lay sprawled upon the floor. When he slowly opened his eyes, he tried to pick himself up, accustomed to total darkness. But his efforts were in vain, as he experienced more pain than Kari.
"Three ribs cracked and a leg broken, little one." he groaned, trying to be cheerful. "What about you?"
"Sprained my paw."
Brio cried silently.
"Not only will we never be able to scale the cliff, but I'm in no condition to travel."
"We're trapped?" Brio detected a sob in the young doormouse's voice.
"I am, but not you. See if you can find us some food."
"I've never been anywhere without an elder."
"There are always firsts."
Kari touched the old mouse's paw.
"I won't leave without you."
"Listen to me, go!"
Without a word, Kari ran off into the darkness.
When she returned, Brio groaned and rolled over.
"Anything, little one?"
"No," Kari stated sadly. "All I saw was a big lake. There were reeds in the water. I picked them."
"Did you know I was once assistant infirmary helper?" asked Brio. "Those herbs are very good for dressings, expecially when they've never seen sunlight."
"Teach me how to make one and I can bandage up your leg." Kari said excitedly.
"No." said Brio. "I'll do it myself."
Kari perswaded Brother Brio to show her how. His nimble paws flew as he stripped the outside of the reed, revealing the red-colored pulp within. While he had Kari weave the reed outside, Brio shaped the core into a thin, flat sheet. He passed it from paw to paw. When Kari was done, he inserted the red thing into the two small mats, and bound it with a reed.
"Good, little one. I see your weaving has improved."
Kari blushed. "When will you be well enough to walk?"
"A week."
"We don't have that long!"
"There are plants here. But before I send you out to get them, Kari, I want to tell you a story. You're wondering about how I knew about the secret passage, right?"
