Last chapter:
"Well, as you ken, Nuncle Doogy was takin' me on a liddle tour of the Highlands," Began Muffle. They(The Players, Sister Clearily, and Abbess Ferns) were crowded into Cavern Hole. Muffle was relating details about her trip in her broad Highlander accent, whilst Clearily recorded it.
"We stopped at Salamandastron first, 'cause it was sorta on our way, for a visit wi' Lady Mesleme. We got there by boat, on the River Moss, y'know, so it didn't take us long. We picked up a couple of vermin tracks but thought nought of them. Probably some mangy bands, passin' through. Anywho, we made great time, and after a few days o' trekking south, we made it tae th' dar o' the fire mountion.
"Mesleme, along wi' 'er daughter, Rosestripe over there, an' a thousand Long Patrol hares, were there tae weelcome us. A right good score o' days we spent there, swimmin' an' observin' the Long Parol an' 'ow it works an' all that. Rosy an' me were great chums, an' her Mum allowed Rosy to leave Salamandastron and tour wi' us, after being convinced that it would familierize her with the ter'try."
Muffle paused for breath, and Rosestripe took up te narriative.
"Aye, and what a time we had! Sad as I was to leave Mamma, I rather enjoyed leaving the mountion, never having ventured far from it's shores. Well, we took a seaworthy-ship -captured from searats, the nasty things!- named the 'Rosewell' and travaled North'ard, fully provisioned and staying well within sight of the coast. We moored it and left it in the paws of a tribe of sea-otters, and trekked east on foot."
Rosestripe nodded for Muffle to continue, and the ottermaid obliged with a grin.
"Aye, and it wasn't to long afore we came upon a liddle 'idden place by the name of Noonvale! Filled with mice, squirrels, moles, a suprising number of hares, and a few river-otters."
----------------------------------------
Sister Clearily dropped her quill pen that she was using to record the tale. Abbess Ferns looked concerned and alarmed as the good sister's mouth hung open. "My dear, are you ill?"
Clearily shook her head, and gave a small chuckle. "Ill? You must be jesting, Abbess. Now, Muffle, did hear you correctly, 'Noonvale'?"
Muffle nodded, her pretty features puzzled. "Aye marm. We spent a forenight there, wish we coulda stayed longer. Kirrin Vol and his wife were braw kind to us-"
Sister Clearily looked as though she was about to jump up and dance, she was so excited. "Noonvale, oh my bloomin' goodness and great seasons! The place still lives!"
Abbess Ferns shook her head. Clearily had finally been done in. Ferns spoke kindly to her. "Clearily, would you like to go and lay down? Perhaps you should go and take a rest."
Clearily looked horrafied, but she relized what Ferns was speaking of, so she said rather wryly. "And miss educating you lot on Redwall history? Certianly not, m'am! Come on now, you must remember your lessons from Abbey School?"
Ferns looked suprised and her face lighted up as it struck her. "Of course! Noonvale, why diddn't I reconize the name?"
Poppy politely interuppted. "Pardon me, marms, but wot the ballyhooday are you speaking of?"
Clearily nodded. "Ah, you have not been to Abbey School, as you were raised in Salamandastron. Of course you haven't the foggiest idea of what I speaking of! Er, right. Ahem. Noonvale,"She explained. "Was-is, actuelly,- the home of very peacable beasts. A long, long time ago before Redwall was built, a young mouse called Brome wandered away from Noonvale. He was captured by a stoat called Badrang, who was, in fact, a vermin warlord in the middle of building his fortress. He imprisened Brome. When he didn't come back, his father sent his sister, Laterose, and a trusted mole called Grumm to fetch him. Laterose-or Rose as she was known- was by far the prettiest, nicest, and most lovely young mousemaid in all the land. She was also very brave, and saved Martin-Yes, Martin the Warrior- from death by seagulls! He had been tied up on the top of the partily completed fortress for 'disobidience of a slave' to Badrang. Rose saved Martin by calling like an eagle-she could imatate any and every bird call well-and grightened the gulls away. Some of the vermin were frightened too, and that gave some of Badrang's slaves the courage to chuck stones at the vermin's backs-"
Muffle interuppted. "Why was Martin a slave?"
"Well, he had been captured when he was very young, along with his grandmother, who died soon after. It was after Luke-Martin's father- had sailed away, ne'er to return, and Martin possesed Luke's sword. Badrang now had it. It wasn't the fabulous sword that we have now, that came much, much later. Anyway, Martin was chucked into a prison pit to die, and he found some of his best friends there, Felldoh the squirrel and Brome! They soon escaped with a bit of night and Grumm tunnalling, but they got away. Unfortunetily, there was a storm, and to escape the vermin chasing them they boarded a small vermin boat to sail to sea. The boat soon broke, and they were cast into the sea. Martin, Rose, and Grumm landed a ways north, whilest Felldoh and Brome ended up much closer to the fort, Marshank. Brome an' Felldoh teamed up with a band of wandering players, and worked on freeing every last slave. They suceeded, and were in the middle of a battle when who shows up but Martin, Rose, Grumm, and a hedgehog maid they met along the way, Pallum. They were at the head of a huge army of pigmy shrews, Guosim, and many other assorted cretures. While traveling they had visited Noonvale, and they had also left it, Rose following much against her father's wishes.
"After a long, hard battle, the Fur'n'Freedom Fighters won, but at a bitter price. Felldoh, and many others, had been killed, but above them all in Martin's heart was Rose, who was slain by Badrang himself just before Martin slew Badrang. It was not until Martin awoke from a state of unconsiousness that he was told that his love, Rose, was dead, and he blamed himself bitterly for it. Right before Rose was taken back to be buried in Noonvale, Martin left, never returning to that area again in his life. He came to Mossflower and-well, I s'pose you lot know the rest."
