This is basically a Redwall story, but its called Rockwood not Redwall.
Chapter 1
It is a bright and cheery morning in the animal country of Rockwood. The birds are singing, the bees are buzzing, and the city, Quaking Aspen, is alive and abuzz with activity. The little ones can be heard in the orchard practicing their singing, and any beast within a hundred miles can smell Jolie the Mole in the kitchen preparing a feast. All of the creatures are peaceful and happy. All except one. In his room, the young mouse Maximus is pacing back and forth and back and forth, all the while grumbling to himself. “Another day, another season, another year, another feast...When is something exciting going to happen!” He starts to actually make noise and quickly checks himself. Sucking up all his grumblings and complaints, the young mouse heads downstairs for breakfast. He walks around for a bit, hoping to avoid his friend Fludge, who can always tell when something is wrong. He walks around for a few minutes, and then finally sits down. “Hey, maybe he really won’t…” “Hulo, hulo, mate!” Of course, Fludge the otter, as always, finds his friend. “Hulo mate…what in bloomin hey is wrong wit you Maxi?” “Well…it’s just…” Maxi tries to act like nothing wrong, “Can you pass the salt?” “Oh common now u blighter…I know when something’s up wit my mate, yes sir I do, now wut is it ole buddy?” ” Oh alright…I hate being ungrateful, but I just feel restless here ya’know? I mean, I wish I could be like Stanton or Monty and travel around all of Rockwood fighting vermin. Not stay here being cooped up with all these peaceful creatures. I want action and adventure and…speak of the devil!” At that very moment Stanton comes striding through the door. Stanton is a very tall badger, sinewy with muscles, and looks like an absolute true warrior. With him marching in came Monty, or Montague Jolly Hopping Toad-Snatching Bear Wrestling Woodsorrow. Monty is a hare with big floppy ears and happy look on his face. He considers himself the indebted servant of Stanton. Stanton saved him from a pack of vermin almost ten years ago, and hasn’t been able to get away from him since. But for some reason, Monty isn’t so happy, and Stanton has a rougher, more downtrodden look in his eye. All of the merriment and joy ceases; they wish to hear the big badger speak. “Hello friends.” The booming voice rolls for all to hear. ”I hate to interrupt your day of feast and merriment, but an evil has come over our beloved land. An evil villain named Alexandria Red Eyes has come and is determined to take over Quaking Aspen and all of its inhabitants!” Murmurs of fear and disbelief circulate around the room. “But we need not be scared! I myself will lead a revolution. I plan on meeting the tyrant before she can make it here. I will stop her in her tracks!” Shouts of joy and happiness rise. “But…I need some volunteers. I need those who are willing to be taught and those who will listen. I need strength and I need courage. I need help to fight this warlord…so who’s with me?” “I am!” The first shout came; you guessed it, from Maxi. Fledge, feeling loyalty to his friend quickly raises his hand and puts it down. Like a shy kid raising his hand in class. “Wut in bloomin hey ‘ave I got meself into now?” he says quietly to himself. The final volunteer comes from a teenage squirrel hanging from the rafters to listen. “You can count me in most definitely, sir!" “Okay, I have three young rips, plus me and Monty…I’ve got some work to do.”
Chapter 2
Deep in the dark castle of Alexandria Red Eyes, an evil laugh is heard. Chuckling how only an evil warlord can chuckle, the red eyed demon has the look of fire in her eyes. She is a rather large fox and has claws like knife blades. Beside her throne sits a basket of pikes, her weapon of choice. And in front of her on a table, she looks into her crystal ball. “So, they think they can challenge me.” She says this to herself as a statement, not a question. “Err… yes ma’am they do!” The sound of a pike whirling through the air is heard and it pins the poor buffoon to a wall by the arm, soon to die an inglorious death. “Silence!!! Fool, do you think I was speaking to you?” “Please …” Shink!!! Another pike quivers into the dumb rat, but this time it hits its mark. “I was not talking to you…Move the carcass out of my room!” A few more guards come in and take out the dead rat. “Never talk unless spoken to!” “Yes ma’am,” they all say in chorus. “Now away with you!” The remaining rats, stoats, and weasels scurry away quickly. Another evil laugh can be heard all throughout the castle. “I can’t believe the badger is going to try and storm my castle with only five people…and three of them still babies. This is going to be fun. I will keep my rats, stoats, and weasels here to guard the castle, and while the five conquering heroes come here, my vipers will have a wonderful time taking over the helpless creatures at Quaking Aspen.” A final chuckle can be heard throughout half of Rockwood, and those who hear it have chills sent down their spine.
Chapter 3
“Training has begun!” Stanton first has the group pick weapons. “I’ll take the dagger and that big rope with a knot in it” says Maxi. “Wut?” screams Fludge in shock and disbelief. ”Wut ‘bout your ole pop’s sword, mate?” “Didn’t I tell you to never speak of him?” “Rightio, sorry mate.” “Wait, I’m curious about this” the squirrel, whose name is Rose, says quizzically. “Well, my father used to hunt vermin, but he was killed about five years ago. He left me it to me. But I know that I’m not worthy of the sword, and will never use it in battle.” “Oh, I’m so sorry.” Says everyone in chorus. “Okay Fludge, you’re next.” “Well, I think that I’ll take them bows an arrers.” “Alright Rose, you’re last.” Why I think I’ll try out the sling and stones if that’s alright with you, sir.” “Of course it is child…Now let training begin!” “Hey what about you guys?” asks Maxi in a surprised tone. “Well, I have my battle axe, and Monty has the spears. Okay, Maxi, I’ll work with you on the rope, and Monty will teach Rose and Fludge how to use the long-distance weapons.” After about five days of training, Maxi was chomping at the bit to go attack. “Cummon! I’m ready, I can take those vermin slime!” “Your time will come child, just be patient.” And patient he was. For six months the team trained and prepared until their strength, knowledge, and abilities in fighting were unmatched. "Now we are ready. We will leave at sunrise."
Chapter 4
Stanton’s crew was already packed and ready to go before sunrise. Now the birds can be heard chirping, and the creatures are waking up from there peaceful night’s sleep. “Up and at ‘em troops!” Stanton’s booming voice is heard throughout all of the creature’s barracks. “Wake up! Rose, Fludge, Maxi!” Slowly, the drowsy creatures wake up and get dressed. After they say their goodbyes, the creatures head onto the trail. “Look at that beautiful sunset mates! Must be some sort of omen thingamagig, dontcha think?” says Fludge, excited about the trip. “Quite possibly, my friend. Quite possibly.” Everyone can tell that Stanton is excited though he tries his best to hide it. “Okay! Okay! The sunset is beautiful! Now lets get going!” Maxi, though already on the trail, is still biting at the bit to fight. “The young one is right, lets go.” As commanded, the troop heads off down the trail. They look back on the big grey gates for what could be the last time.
Chapter 5
“Hahahahahahahahahahahahahaha!” The rolling chuckle again comes from inside the castle. “Here come the fools. They’ll be here soon. Bring me the Vipers!” The vermin again scurry around to do their master’s bidding. “They think they attack in secret. And Stanton still thinks that I have no idea of the penetrability of Aspen, now that the warriors have left.” At this point, five giant vipers slither towards the red-eyed demon. “Yesssss your highnesssssssss.” The largest snake comes forward. It, like the other snakes, is jet black with a red diamond on its neck. It has fangs the size of Alexandria’s pikes. It and the others slither all the way to the throne. “You go in secret to Quaking Aspen. Do not be seen. Sneak into the stronghold. Leave no prisoners.” “With pleassssssure.” The immense snakes slither quickly out of the room. “My vipers will be at Aspen at the same time as Stanton and he fools get here. Things are working out nicely. Muahahaha!” Once again the laugh presides over the castle. All else is silent.
Chapter 6
“What is that up ahead?!” says Maxi, surprised and all little scared at the same time. Five red diamond shapes are seen through the trees. “I have seen those shapes before! Everyone! Attack positions!” Stanton pulls out his axe while Fludge and Rose hide in nearby trees with the bow and the sling. Monty and Maxi walk forward and stand next to the big badger. Like a flash, two giant snakes jump out from their positions in the trees and leap onto Stanton. “Don’t fire!” yells Maxi. “You might hit him!” Rose and Fludge turn and aim for the three remaining snakes fleeing the battle. “It’s no use! I can’t penetrate their armor!” Yells Fludge. “Aim for the red diamond!” yells Rose. “I just brought one down!” Arrows and slingstones zip at the two remaining vipers, but to no avail. They escape untouched. Stanton manages to throw one snake off, but the other bites him. “Stanton!” Maxi rushes towards the snake and starts clubbing it with the rope. The snake turns and wraps around him, attempting to squeeze him to death. “AAAHH!” Maxi drives his dagger into the diamond on its neck. It writhes on the ground, then falls dead. The other snake rushes away, scared of the fierce young mouse. Maxi, Monty, Rose, and Fludge rush to the aid of their fallen friend. His flesh is already cold.
Chapter 7
“Stanton, you were the best friend I ever had. I always will be your friend and indebted servant. I will miss you deeply, and always love you as the father I never had.” With that, poor Monty broke into tears. Monty and everyone else are crowded around the crude grave of their friend. Listening to the speech, everyone starts crying. Everyone except Maxi. “Come friends. He would not have tears. He would have wanted us to continue. He would have wanted us to kill the vermin leader, who no doubt sent the snakes that killed our friend.” “He’s right” says Monty, drying his tears. “We must continue.” The remaining four trudge down the road, more solemn and without hope then they have ever been. And though they do not know it yet, they have a new leader.
Chapter 8
“Snakes!!! We have snakes!” A large porcupine bursts through the door. “Arm yourselves here come the….ARGH!” The first snake rushes through the door and stabs him through the back with its long fangs. The creatures of Quaking Aspen run around like chickens with their heads cut off. Blood and venom are dripping everywhere. Within five minutes, the creatures of Aspen are wiped out. Bodies lay thrown about, and no creature is left alive. Satisfied, the merciless snakes leave the house of death.
Chapter 9
“There it is, do you see it?” asks Maxi in a hushed voice. The troop, lying in the ditch, spies the large castle. It is black and ominous. It looks like the old vampire layers you see in movies. “Yea, I see it there, mate, but it done gone and gave me the willies it has.” They slowly creep up, in the cover of the trees and the silence of the night. “There are sentries everywhere, but I spy a gate in the back. We can probably sneak through, but keep your weapons at ready. Fludge slowly raises his bow and arrow, while all of the others follow suit. “Hey!” Thunk. The guard falls to one of Rose’s pebbles. “Come on, get inside before more guards come” Maxi commands. The group heads through the gate and into the large castle. “We need to split up if we want to find Alexandria’s room. I’ll go with Fludge down the right hallway. Rose, you and Monty go down the left hallway.” The group, following Maxi’s orders, splits up and travels their separate ways. A few minutes later, Maxi and Fludge here cries from the other side of the castle. “Sounds like Rose and Monty are in trouble. Let’s go Fludge!” The two heroes rush of down the corridor. They arrive to find Rose and Monty tied up in Alexandria’s room. “Sssh….stay quiet Fludge. I’ll try and get a signal to Rose and Monty.” Suddenly, a guard comes up behind Fludge and drags him away. “FLUDGE!!!!!” Maxi gets his rope ready and prepares to fight the onslaught of the vermin horde.
Chapter 10
Maxi spins and whirls to fight of the horde. Thud! Thwak! Maxi continues to lash out and deal punishing blows to those brave enough to try to attack. Five minutes and fifty vermin later, Alexandria calls out, “Retreat! Rally back to me, you mindless oafs, back to me!” The flood of vermin rushes away from the battle and back to the red-eyed devil. Suddenly archers surround Maxi. “I offer you a deal mouse! You lay down your weapon and I will allow you to go free. If not, my archers would be happy to make you into a pincushion.” He hears the sound of bows being drawn. “Coward!” “What did you say?!” Alexandria is shocked at the boldness and courage of the young mouse. “You cannot fight, can you? You, the mighty warlord, must have your little minions fight for you! No doubt, you sent the vipers that killed our beloved friend! And no doubt you could not fight me on your own! If you are so strong and powerful, why not fight me yourself? I’ll make you a deal, we will fight, to the death, if I win, my friends go free. If you win, my friends die and you may keep your honor. But if you refuse my challenge, I will be forced to kill you and all your vermin by force!!!” “Hahahahahaha…. You kill us by….hahahahaha. Very well mouse, I admire your spunk. I will fight you. Prepare to die.” “Obviously, one of us will die, but it will not be me.”
Chapter 11
Like a flash, the warlord jumps down from her thrown. She has lightning quickness, and her sharp claws quickly tear Maxi’s rope to pieces. He pulls out his dagger and prepares to stop the onslaught of slashes from the red-eyed demon. Meanwhile, Fludge is struggling to free himself from the rope that binds him. He gets free and prepares to help Maxi. The guards see him and decide it best to slaughter Monty and Rose, in case they escape too. In horror, Fludge sees the head’s of his companions rolling on the ground. He sits back down, and the guards tie his feet, so he can’t run to help Maxi. Maxi is losing the battle. The fox has great strength and speed. She strikes out with her claws once more, and the dagger flies form Maxi’s hands. He crawls back on the ground, trying to find something to use as a weapon. The fox steps on his chest with one foot, pinning him to the ground. Just when all hope was lost, Maxi hears a familiar voice, “Don’t give up, my friend. There is always a way.” “Stanton?” The voice is gone. “Maxi!” Fludge cries to him and throws the sword of Anturon, Maxi’s father. Maxi catches it and jabs it into Alexandria’s heart. The fox rolls over, her reign of terror ended. Her eyes glaze over. Maxi gets up, spits on the carcass, and walks away with his friend. To this day, there are two warriors who walk through Rockwood. They are the protectors of good, and free all good creatures from oppressive vermin. Like Stanton and Montague, they live on as legends forever.
