Religion is not my field of expertise, but I think Quittner raised an important point. I've attended mainly Catholic masses, and I've noticed that the entire mass, aside from the day's sermon, hymns, and petitions, is a pre-ordered set of rituals (kneeling, reciting, standing, responses, etc.) that never changes. I can understand this concept to a degree, such as with Holy Communion, but many of the rituals of mass are not appealing to me at all.

When God created man, he created man sinless, but with the capability to disobey. I believe this is because there's no meaning in love and devotion when it comes from a robot programmed to spit out nothing but love and devotion. God granted us the ability to choose whether we will love Him or leave Him, and the choice we make is genuinely our own.

The church masses I've attended are robotic in nature. Everyone stands, kneels, sits, and recites the same thing at the same time. Where is the personalization of prayer? Why have we taken the Lord's Prayer or the Apostle's Creed and turned it into a once-a-week ritual that we blurt out from memory? Prayer needs to come from the heart, and I believe this is best done alone, when our full focus and attention is on Him. I think large church masses should be devoted to hearing and understanding God's word, lessons in applying His word in our daily lives, and receiving communion.
