Hey folks! Sorry it took so long for an update, there is a serious shortage of cheap internet access along the West Coast of the South Island. We just arrived in Christchurch today, and have mangaged to find a reasonable price of $3 an hour. It's not as good as the $2 an hour we paid in Auckland, but it'll do.

So as promised, here are the details of our Abel Tasman Adventure!

Our original plan for journeying through Abel Tasman was either to do a day hike, or to do a multiday hike, spending the nights at the huts set up by the Department of Conservation. Turns out that huts are almost impossible to book, and tents are super easy to rent, so we decided to hike for 3 days carrying our house on our back! It was quite an experience for both of us, never having done a multiday camping hike.

We rented ourselves a tent, some foamies and a stove, and were lucky enough to hit a kick-ass Sunday rummage sale type thing in the parking lot of our grocery store. This yielded Sarah a nice $2 jacket, and I paid $1.50 for a warm sweater and long sleave shirt!

We spent 3 days in the park. We took the bus out of Nelson into Marahau, where we took a water taxi to Tonga Bay. We hiked the first day from Tonga Bay to Bark Bay. The Bark Bay campgroud was neat because when the tide is in you have water on either side of you! That night was pretty rough for Sarah because her throat was so sore, but she made it through... we were both pretty cold though, I didn't know New Zealand gets to cold!

On our second day we walked from Bark Bay to Anchorage Bay, which took us past Torrent Bay where mom and Lynne spend the night years ago. I saw lots of pretty shells mom! ;) In fact, it was really hard to cross the beach without stepping on tons of clam shells!

The third night we spent at a campsite right near the town. It wasn't very nice, really just a big field, but we had it all to ourselves.... or so we thought, until the possums came out to play. At first we were all excited about seeing wild animals, but we very soon came to see how annoying they really are! Possums in New Zealand have no natural preditors, so we had a heck of a time trying to scare them away! One of them even thought it would be a good idea to jump on our tent... we were a little nervous going to bed with them around. I think the moon must hvae been full that night, because Sarah and I sat outside playing cards by the moonlight with no torch or flashlight going, and we could see our cards perfectly, it was pretty neat :)
