Does anyone remember the Sabre Jet crashing on Speke Boulevard back in 54-55. How about the fair which used to arrive every year at the bottom of Western Avenue. Does anyone remember the Ford factory being built.

Hi I don't know who I'm emailing but never mind. I lived in Speke for 22 years from 1944 to 1966 when I got married. I don't remember a jet crashing in 54-55 and I think it is something I would remember. just the one that crashed onto the factory in Speke Hall Road in about 65-66.
The fair at the bottom of western av. I went every year. One year in the early 50s I was on the Swing Boats when a young girl walked under it and I hit her, cutting her head. The strange thing is she walked all the way up Western Av. and Linner Road and who do you think took her in and cleaned her up, my Mum. She was bleeding and had passed all them people and the only one to stop her was my Mum.Very strange.
We hated the Ford Factory being built as we lost a great play ground, the woods and all the ponds.
best wishes Ken Savage

Yes I remember it well .It belonged to a CANADIAN squadron
based at SPEKE[ Super Sabres]. It careered off the end of the runway, crossed the carriageway and ended up in the field opposite in SPEKE HALL AVENUE.. If you can remember the old dis-used lane where the Gypsies used to camp ..well it was about sixty yards to the right of the lane. The field was later turned into a huge sports field...later on to be down-sized. I remember the field being packed when the annual air displays took place on/over the airfield.

Alan.....you were right on the button......the crash happened right where you said it did and the pilot walked away back to the Speke airfield. Do you remember the fair which used to visit every year at the bottom of Western Avenue on the back field there. I remember sitting with the gypsies'kids on that dis-used country lane, at the back of Dymchurch prefabs. I sampled my first taste of Hedgehog on their campfires. That's what they used to eat quite often, when their dogs used to find them. The hogs were rolled in clay, after being killed, and then tossed onto the fire whole. The clay baked hard and when it cooled down, the whole thing was broken open and the skin peeled off with the clay pot attached. I remember the meat was good and very lean. That was 55 years ago and of course Hedgehogs are now protected like most of the other British flora and fauna.
Do you remember the Ford factory being built? It is now the Jaguar Plant. I remember the huge dredgers emptying the many ponds that were on that site. The kids of the area helped themselves to the many hundreds of roach and other fish that were emptied onto the fields by the machinery. It was a shame to lose those ponds because that's where all the local kids fished.

>The Sabre Jet crashed and finished in the Old Lane near the pond just off Speke Hall Avenue. It was earlier than 1954/55 - I would guess 1949/50. There was also a Viscount crash onto the Mothaks factory in the early 1950's. At one of the Speke Airshows a famous Frenchman, known as The Birdman, died when his parachute failed to open and he crashed into a field near Hunts Cross. He was supposed to glide using wooden wings to land at the airport but I think they were damaged as he left the plane. It happened on a Bank Holiday about 1956.

Hello to anyone who may remember me.

Good to hear from you Tom - I think you are now in Ontario?
Tomorrow I am going to Speke and will be in Liverpool for 3/4 days seeing some old school friends and relatives. I will meet Ray Davies (School Way) in the morning at the old airport terminal - now Marriott Hotel. Speke never had one of them in the old days.

Will send you some news when I return.

Best regards

Brian

>Hi, i remember Ford's being built, i used to live right by the Orient. Dinner times were full off contractors looking for a quick pint. Your right about it being a great place to play before Fords. At the top end (Weastern Ave) there where the Sixes holes, where you could fish, although i believe there were seven. You cross the railway line via the Table bridge. Further down along Old Hutt Lane, you could enter Chyanne's farm for pears and apples, if you had the bottle. By ell he was a big guy. We used to "collect" spuds and daffodils from his fields next to Speke Estate, until he stopped growing them.
It was a brilliant place to be before Fords.

I lived in Sandgate Road and heard about the crash coming home from Stocktonwod Road School for lunch. The F86 had overshot the runway crossing the airfield perimeter crossing the dual carriageway and ended up with its nose half buried in the corner of the field behind the playing field. it looked like the pilot got our OK.....but it was really exciting!
