Subject: more thoughts about canon

I saw this link on metafandom just after the previous discussion here about what actually constitutes fanfiction canon

http://rahirah.livejournal.com/230191.html?format=light

and thought I'd mention it since the author brings up some good points. This in particular seemed interesting to me

In that respect, I worry more about getting too close to canon than about straying too far. Given that I’m using the same characters and the same setting, I don’t want to tell the same story Joss or Wendy Pini did, because, well, what’s the point? They already told those stories.

I love reading fiction that basically retells a canon sequence, including more back and sidestory as well as multiple pov on different scenes (Gen's 'fill in the blank' stories are an excellent example of this), but I never seem to want to write them. (sidebar question -- do authors like to read the same kind of stories that they like to write?)

There are also some interesting thoughts about the differences between writing in an "open" or "closed" canon -- for authors who have been writing since the show was running and have continued to write (or think about writing) since it finished, have your responses to the characters and the whole issue of canon information changed since the door shut?

Apologies for the scattered nature of this posting, but I wanted to get this out while I was thinking about it.
