It never would have occurred to me that someone would be using AU as "practice" for original fiction writing -- but it makes perfect sense now that you mention it! Being a "history geek" (or for someone else, a scifi geek, or whatever else might prompt an AU) is another really interesting motivation. I bet AU would be a very fun way to explore an interest like that.
