Yah you for nearly finishing your story!

But when certain readers (on a different board) hinted about expecting a happy ending, even to the point of saying, "you'll be killing me if you write an unhappy ending".....I've written two endings - the one I want and one for the HR readers.

Sigh.

As long as you write Michael/Nikita, you will come up against this problem. If you're not in trouble for not getting them into bed quickly enough, you're in trouble for daring to suggest that they might have loved someone else in their lives before they met, or even be drawn to someone else at the same time. (I don't know about you, but for me gritty realism is much hotter and much more believable than Disneyfied-type lurve any day.)

Not every HR story has to have a 'happy ever after' ending and not every HR story has to end with Nikita pregnant and Michael building a white picket fence around their new dream home. There is *nothing* wrong with those endings, particularly in an AU where Section One isn't a factor, but it's unfortunate that a lot of people have come to expect - and demand - that that's the ending that they get. And when that's not quite what the author had in mind, well...that's a problem.

The only thing I can tell you is what I would tell myself in the same situation: write the ending that YOU want. It's your story, your universe that you have created and slaved over and spend hours and hours thinking about - it should be YOUR ending as well. It's not dissing the readers or deliberately ignoring their wishes - it's simply writing *your* story the way *you* want it. And if there are some readers that don't see it that way and choose to be upset about what you've written, then that's totally up to them. Okay?

Good luck with whatever you decide, and I'm looking forward to your next story. *g*
