I don't really see the pattern of LFN fanfic moving from long epics to shorter pieces -- I think we still have just as many epics as before. But one thing that *has* changed is the number of AUs. In fact, I think the majority of LFN fanfic today is AU in some way or another. The AUs, interestingly, still tend to be epics, and what few canon stories there are seem to be shorter pieces. (There's also a fair number of post-canon stories, which I suppose could arguably be classified as a type of AU.)

I would chalk it up to people probably feeling that they've exhausted the possibilities of canon, as well as the fact that canon ultimately left many fans unsatisfied in a way that perhaps only AU can make them feel better about.
