Was Michael's (or anyone's) desire to stay alive enough justification to cause harm to someone else, without any requirement for compensation to the wronged person? Any need to expiate the sin?

And even having agreed to contract a marriage under false pretences, did he still have an obligation to Elena to treat that marriage as real and valid?

There are some ethicial tradtions that would say yes, and some that would say no.

I don't have a clear answer myself - but I think it is an interesting question to consider.
