Was Michael's (or anyone's) desire to stay alive enough justification to cause harm to someone else, without any requirement for compensation to the wronged person? Any need to expiate the sin?

This, for me, is the more challenging question, and one that I would have to think about.

But this?

And even having agreed to contract a marriage under false pretences, did he still have an obligation to Elena to treat that marriage as real and valid?

That would strike me as oddly formalistic and meaningless -- obeying the letter of the law but not the spirit, so to speak.
