It's a bit like folks who committed crimes while under the influence, and then later get clean and dry.

I think it's completely different, actually. *g* Michael's a Section Operative - he was ordered to seduce and then marry a mark. It's not as though he married Elena on a drunken whim and then tried to explain his behaviour away as the result of having drunk two crates of tequila.

Does that alter their guilt in the first place? Remove it? Are you not guilty of murder, theft, rape, robbery, assult, adultery, if you do it while high? Our legal and ethical traditions both insist that you *are* in fact still responsible.

Hmm. Michael was under an obligation from Section to be unfaithful to Simone, something of which she would have been well aware and something that presumably caused him no end of The Angst.

I'm not trying to exonerate him - I love that the man has flaws - but I can almost see how he handled things the way he did. He slept with Nikita in Hard Landing, which technically was being unfaithful to Elena. Given that he had spent the last six months thinking Nikita was dead *and* his obvious distress the next morning, I'm prepared to cut him some slack, even though *he* seemed to be beating himself up over it.

He then spent the next god-only-knows-the-time-frame dodging Nikita's spoken and unspoken invitations to resume their relationship. He was ordered by Section to sleep with her (I've always assumed that Nikita wasn't the only one who got that directive) in Pyschic Pilgrim so he did so, and then it was off again. It was only after he 'died' a second time, leaving Elena a widow, that he then pursued a physical relationhip with Nikita again.

*shrugs* It's such a murky emotional minefield, isn't it? In the end, I think that they were all victims (Michael, Simone, Nikita) to some extent, but none more so than Elena.
