and most authors, particularly those without many stories in the archives haven't (yet) been specifically asked, and our ground rules - at least at present - rule out open discussion of authors who have not specifically been asked and agreed.

I'm not saying that we don't have a core of generous authors who've given us the green light to do this, because we do and I appreciate them very much - though even that consent has been given in the context of the structured 'fanfic chats,' set dates, one story, chance to respond - and not in a more open ended context.

Which means, I think anyway, that here in the context of the FFMB, we haven't really developed an ethic that says for example, that in a random discussion of popular themes over time, commenters can bring in specific examples from the breadth of archived fic *and* simultaneously comment on them.

As in "In story A, author B did a pretty nice job with Y, but still I think the plot structure made it difficult to fully develop those themes. Author M did a better job with it in her story, CC, imo, because......"

It isn't as dramatic as a gag rule, but still - I think it forces certain kinds of discussion into less open places and makes it difficult to share the discussion with people who don't have access to the more obscure spots, and reduces other open of discussion to broad generalizations that can't really be pushed any furhter out of respect for potentially hurt feelings on the part of the author.

Which may not be a bad thing - but I think it is worth acknowledging that it is, indeed, a thing. Perhaps especially in a smaller fandom, like this one.
