We’re not supposed to be here. It’s a secret. We even have different names now. My teacher thinks I’m Adam Sanders. But I’m not. My name is Adam Samuelle. Like my daddy. It says so on the smooth rock right here. Michael Samuelle. Born 1965. Died 1998. He was in a big wooden box and they buried it in the ground. Mommy says he’s in heaven with Jesus. But I’m not sure.

Mommy brought real flowers to put in front of the rock. They made me sneeze in the taxi. I can see the taxi driver looking at his watch and smoking a cigarette. Mommy told him we would be right back. Because we’re not supposed to be here. But it’s Daddy’s birthday. It must be someone else’s birthday, too. I saw him when we got out of the taxi. He hid behind a tree, and I think he’s still there. He rides a motorcycle like Daddy did sometimes. It’s parked on the street down the block.

Mommy grabbed my hand and we ran back to the taxi. I won. I asked her if we were coming back next year for Daddy’s birthday and she said no. She looked sad. She didn't look at me, but I think she was crying. I looked out the back window. I was right. The man was still behind the tree, but he stepped out as we drove away. He looked just like my daddy. I don’t think Daddy is with Jesus. I think he’s with us.
