And I think that scene -- but also others that weren't cut, especially in (but not limited to) the first couple of seasons -- showed that the two of them had considerable professional respect for each other most of the time.

If you moved Madeline into a position where she was no longer directly above Michael (and by extension Nikita) in the hierarchy, but rather had more of an indirect and longer-distance relationship, I think the things that forced them into an adversarial dynamic within Section One would no longer be much of a factor.

Nikita, in this scenario, would also have an interesting role to play as their - combined - protege.

Protege might be too strong a word, although that depends on at what stage of canon you would kill off Paul. But I would agree that once you removed Madeline from Section, she would be much more tolerant of Nikita and willing to allow Michael to exercise his own discretion in that regard.

I can very readily see Madeline wielding her influence to make sure that Section One got extra budget allocations and other privileges denied to the other Sections, kind of the way a Congressmember might fight for pork barrel legislation for her district. LOL. She would probably also be a very useful source of leaks and other information to Michael if she thought it would be helpful. And all sorts of other things.

It *is* fun to think of the possibilities, isn't it?
