This is very nice indeed -- Davenport is one of those characters that has enough presence to suggest a backstory, but since he doesn't have one in canon, he's open to multiple interpretations.

I'm very fond of the idea that Davenport was special to Operations through his military background.

Tangential to the discussion we were having on the story chat thread about "early" v "late" stories (written early in the series), I think one of the identifiers is how free people seem to be with creating backstory early in the series. After more of it is established in canon, fewer people are willing to deviate from that to explore other possibilities.
