Just some thoughts....
Option One: Even if Pretosian found a more compliant pet, I believe that Madeline was smart enough to find another way to keep Operations alive. I believe he lived becuase Madeline forced her will upon him as he was sleeping and told him to "Live." Also he was an incredibly ctrong individual who had been through very difficult situations in this past (as we know it). He had many reasons to live.
Option Two: Again Ops and Madeline in Mandatory Refusal. An interesting line of thought. We all know Michael, and he would have done anything to complete his mission. But would he have really let Madeline die? He would still be mourning the loss of Nikita and Madeline may, at this point in time, become important enough to Michael as a female consort, that he wouldn't let her die for the mission.
Now, assuming Madeline lives through MR then it's onto the end of S2 and Paul stated that they knew about Adrian's organization and theat it never really posed a threat. So Adrian may still be put in the deep freeze at the end of S2 since Madeline can't seem to kill her.
So we get to S3 and there is no M&N sex police to keep the dynamiz couple distracted from more important business like George, Oversight, Center, Mr. Jones, etc. They would have Michael, assuming he got over Niktia's death, at top form and next in line for the Perch.
I could see them overtaking George and seeing through the whole Hillinger business. I actually think they may have been very successful had our girl Nikita been taken out of play in Mercy.
But *sigh* I am a DON and that didn't happen. But I will continue to think about this. It's a great conversation.
