Option One: Even if Pretosian found a more compliant pet, I believe that Madeline was smart enough to find another way to keep Operations alive. I believe he lived becuase Madeline forced her will upon him as he was sleeping and told him to "Live." Also he was an incredibly ctrong individual who had been through very difficult situations in this past (as we know it). He had many reasons to live.

I think you have a plausible argument here. The only question is whether Petrosian would have found another way to kill Operations when it appeared he was starting to recover. In canon, he relied on Nikita, but she balked at commiting murder. If she hadn't been in the picture, he might have chosen someone with fewer moral scruples, or he may have even just done it himself. Although I think Madeline would have been battling him (and whoever his underling would be) the entire way, and she's a formidable opponent, so who knows?

So...I think the outcome here is a very open question. Operations might have lived, but he also might very well have died, and that would have changed *everything* in Section. (And not necessarily for the better, I might add!)

Option Two: Again Ops and Madeline in Mandatory Refusal. An interesting line of thought. We all know Michael, and he would have done anything to complete his mission. But would he have really let Madeline die? He would still be mourning the loss of Nikita and Madeline may, at this point in time, become important enough to Michael as a female consort, that he wouldn't let her die for the mission.

I'm a little more skeptical here. While I *do* believe that Michael would have saved Madeline had he had the opportunity, at least in canon he simply didn't arrive in time. Nikita got there first, and with no time to spare. Michael arrived very shortly afterwards, but if it hadn't been for Nikita it would have been too late for Madeline. I suppose one could argue that Nikita delayed Michael somewhat when she met with him to try to persuade him to give up the mission, and without that happening he could have used that time to get to the target a bit faster, but...I don't know. I don't think Madeline's chances are good in this scenario. Not hopeless, perhaps, but definitely not good.

As for the rest...assuming for the sake of argument that neither Operations nor Madeline dies early on in the S2 timeline, you might be right about the rest. I'll have to give it a bit of thought and come back!

Fun thread, eh?

P.S. Mary: I sent you an email a while back. Not sure if you got it.
