And in there, I think I hit on what I find most appealing in a character – someone who doesn’t walk the straight and narrow but has understandable lines that they won’t cross.

I'm noticing similar common traits in my characters, and I guess that's what works - the character traits. It doesn't matter if the character is a spy or a slayer.

Yes, but do you write Monk fanfic? Have you ever been tempted to? *g*

The best thing about fiction is that it allows us to live many lives, without actually having to go through them in RL. Angst in fiction - great. In RL - not so much, lol!
