Wow! I wrote this one two years ago as of yesterday!

I broke THE RULE on this one...
4/5/03

Madeline stood stiffly at the van access door, waiting silently as it screeched open. The operatives entering stopped with their cargo as they saw her. She stepped up to the men as they laid the body on the waiting gurney, and the men all took a step back from her, except for one. “This is all your fault, you know. You pushed him too hard, too fast.”

Madeline ran her trembling fingers through the russet waves, regretting that it had come to this. “I know, Chuck, I know.” The sightless green eyes, unseeing, accused her. “Oh, Michael, I’m so sorry.”

I’ve been on Michael’s team for a long time, since before he lost Simone. Being on his team has always meant that I have a better chance of coming back from missions on two legs, and not in a body bag.

They must have told him my function in the upcoming profile. “Snow,” he says quietly to me, “I’m glad they chose you. I know what a good shot you are. Thanks…”

He looked surprised when I walked into the hospital room and shot Vacek, and then turned my gun on him. It felt strange to shoot my team leader.

“I love you.”

“I love you, too.”

We delayed the bittersweet parting as long as possible…Neither of us wanted to lose the other. We had fought too long to be together and now, at last, the final parting was upon us. It could no longer be delayed. We hugged. I kissed him, and with a last look into his wonderful eyes, I memorized what I might never see again.

“Goodbye. Be happy.”

“I will, Dad, tell Nikita I said Hello.” With that, my son, my Adam, turned and left me standing in the train station with tears in my eyes.

I was prepared to die for her, but he took the decision from me. Operations decided I could survive better without her than she could without me.

Somehow we both survived, but then she was given the task of evaluating Section, of evaluating me. The eyes of Section and Center on her, she began to extol my virtues. My eyes begged her. Do you not see what you are doing? Again, I took the decision from her hands.

“I betrayed Section. I've put your well-being ahead of everything else.” There, it’s done. I’m done.

“I have no choice but to recommend your cancellation.“
