and for me, the intellectual challenge/joy of it has been exactly this, to replicate as much as I can an envrionment with as many constraints as Section on behavior, largely as an exploration of the ancient nurture or nature debate. What I play with is, how much of what we saw was the core of "michael' or "niktia" and how much a reflection of their environment, and how much can you take away before you end up with different people? Or, alternatively, how much do I have to have 'in' the new story environment in order to make them look and feel like themselves, as we knew them in canon?

Obviously, a lot of this intellectual exploration never sees the light of day - because I discard it before it ever even gets typed, but for me, that is the appeal of AU stories.

Nell
