I'd still try to narrow it down, at least by gen/het/slash, but my first vote would probably be for Glass Onion. It's not going to have the really esoteric stuff that ff.net has, but the dreck to quality ratio is a lot higher. It really is hard to think of something that has the sheer breadth of ff.net, but there are certainly significant disadvantages to the site.

Actually, what I'd probably do is send a newbie to a multi-fandom rec site that I trusted. I happen to co-run one, but I'd also recommend Bright Shiny Objects and Unfit for Society.
