interesting pa -

as someone who is now expected (within 7 years) to bring in federal money as a function of tenure - one of the issues i'm personally stuggling with is the university 'owning' the results of that work. Essentially, my intellectual property secures the federal funding, the university had a clause that allows them to not retain my services if i don't secure federal funding, and in the end i don't own any of the 'stuff' (likely programs in my case) that are a result.

I think it is a challenge that requires thoughtful debate. Without the funding I likely don't prove my ideas in the scientific community but with funding I lose ownership of my ideas. The good news in my case is that I enjoy the process of discovery so much that I'm not uncomfortable with the loss of ownership and in compensation I get security and benefits. Who doesn't want their cake and have the ability to eat it as well though?
