A man I knew in CA used to argue though that the air pollutants from this type of burning essentially negated the beneficial effects of the biomass fuel. Do you know anything about this? It sounds unreliable on the surface - but it has stuck in my brain for many years.

We have a few dairy farms in WI capturing methane for energy. Many thinking this is a very viable way to manage manure. Dad has used some of the solid methane farm waste after processing for tilling into the garden. It's like a fine sawdust. I remember a political ad from some guy years back (running against Feingold in his first campaign for SEnate) that had a guy in a white lab coat chasing cows around a pasture with a jar capturing 'cow gas' and then joking about Feingold's support of methane farms.
