my recollection:
right-wing radio talking heads hated it and lead the charge to 86 it. They saw it as both a put-down and liberal art-establishment rip-off (MKEeans wouldn't know better). Never understood it as "art" and declared it crap. Newly elected county supervisor Scott Walker jumped on the bandwagon. Oppenheim either didn't know about the storm brewing, or ignored it. When the deadline for installation came he wasn't ready. He claimed the county asked him to hold off because the garage was not complete. Walker cancelled the contract citing the missed deadline, and offered the opinion that the piece would overwhelm the parking structure. Walker wanted to try to get back some of the money paid (something like 165K of the 220K total), but I don't remember if anything ever came of that.

It's water under the bridge, but I just wish he would have been on schedule because he had a contract and Walker wouldn't have had a legal leg to stand on.
