Interesting site - thanks!

My approach in class this semester (dealing with management of issues like stroke, spinal cord injury, traumatic brain injury, muliple sclerosis and Parkinson's disease) is to try to get students to consider these public health concerns. More resources to prevention than study of rehabilitation.

The concern I have with smoking, obesity, and other health influencing behaviors (like not wearing helmets on a motorcycle, or not wearing seat belts in a car) is that at some point, the public is responsible for the care of the individual and their health. I have a financial interest in people preventing illness and disease through healthy eating and physical activity.

It is well supported that regular participation in physical activity is neuroprotective (increases immunoglobulin E in the brain) and staves off even genetically predetermined cases of diseases like MS and Parkinsons for up to 20% of the life of the individual. Translate that to costs I'll support when the person receives Medicare - and that's a savings that should not be ignored by the public at large.

I'm stuck at the moment around the issue of public accountability - being accountable to the public for choices when the public bears the burden of care - if not now, then at some point in the future.

Not that I need to remind you - but of all of us here on the voy, clearly benefits most at the moment from public safety nets for health care (title 19 for Dan), and we likely spend most on health care this year anyway with our recent bout with Tommy. As far as we know - absolutely no relation to eating or physical activity could have prevented those monies being spent (we're likely looking at co-pays for up to $100K of care for this knee thing). I'm trying to be careful to not throw stones, knowing I live in a glass house.

Still, don't you have some say in how I make health care decisions for Danny (and how I prevent him from having to use the system) since you all support that system through tax monies?
