In reply to: tjm 's message, "How corporate America is working to develop alternatives to oil and gas" on 02/22/05 4:42:40pm

in response to the question of solar and wind power and alternative building in new mex:

1. i checked in to solar conversion/supplements to our house a year or so ago and could barely find any company doing retrofitting and when i found a company, the person i spoke to told me it was handsdown more economical to Insulate, Replace Doors and Windows, upgrade furnaces and stick with Propane. i was shocked. they didn't even want my business. i still don't believe it's true but perhaps the market is not yet ready for the retrofit.

2. windpower i have shared info abt on the Voy last year; maybe you'll recall our friend who does the Biodiesel and Wind Power pursuit. I do know that there is some serious opposition to wind Power because they kill the birds and they are unslightly and make noise. [in reality, house cats are the biggest threat to North American Songbirds]

3. Earthships are in Taos. supposedly self-sustaining, built into the earth, recirculating water and waste and all. i've heard negative things abt the company [from clients themselves] and the effectiveness of the houses [ala Biosphere]. but the idea is the right approach i think and there are more success stories than failures with earthships. they are pretty cool.
