At this point the docs think that the infection was actually an opportunistic infection secondary to the Lyme's but not caused by the Lyme bacterium directly. So, good news is that because his joint got infected we were able to get him on antibiotics relatively 'early' in the infectious process - which is what the course of action would have been had we known it was Lyme's right from the start. Bad news was there was 4 months or so between infection and treatment with antibiotics, so the risk for some challenge remains.

We have a meeting with rheumatology (who follows these infections) on the 7th of March. Hoping to learn more about Lyme's by then so I can ask better questions at that time.

Kicking myself a little that I didn't think of this in Sept when it happened the first time....., but I never saw a bite so I was never thinking along those lines. I did what the docs did which is start thinking about muscle/ligament/bone. As PTs we're always told when you hear hoofbeats look for horses not zebras - but in this case I think we missed a zebra by not asking the right questions. Given my experience with Danny, you'd think I'd be good at finding zebras by now.

2 more weeks of anti-inflammatory meds and oral antibiotics, then hopefully done for awhile.
