Bill tying insurance rates to weight dies

By Rocky Mountain News
March 14, 2005

A House panel killed a bill that would have given discounts on health insurance for employees who keep their weight down.

The bill died on a 6-5 vote in the House Business Affairs and Labor Committee last week. Those opposed to the bill worried that it would encourage employers to hire only fit and trim people so they could get discounts on their share of insurance premiums.

Afterward, bill sponsor Rep. John Witwer, R-Evergreen, said he was flabbergasted that attempts to encourage people to have healthy lifestyles could be considered discriminatory. If being a smoker or being overweight ever gets defined as a disability, "any and all of our prevention efforts will become discriminatory," said Witwer, a retired physician.

Witwer said he'll try again next year to get the bill passed.
