Wanting your collective input....

Personally, think we're being diverted from the real discussion - which in my opinion is who has the right to make medical decisions when the individual in question is now incapable of making them for him/herself and hasn't specified in careful detail what those decisions would be when in a right state of mind...

I'm personally offended by congress' actions this week - wondering how in one vote they can uphold the 'culture of life' while simultaneously submitting a budget that reduces the Medicaid payments which pay for the tube feeds that keep said patient alive.

Saddened by the fact that these decisions happen every day and that the only reason congress thought their involvement is meaningful is in the point of puclic disagreement.

Of note - Geo and I have carefully, lovingly, and painfully written an advanced directive for Danny that specifies what to do in the event neither of us are around when he's in a crisis. I hate to think of congress over-ruling our decisions. Personally, don't think they would because we're in agreement -yet the precendent argued in this case puts the decisions of congress above those of the legally appointed representative.

Mind you - in this whole thing I side with the right of the husband to make the decision; and as a therapist who has spent hours with folks in the same and worse states as Ms. Shaivo, I don't think the tube should be pulled.
