agreed. What I would like to see is to have someone who has the bully pulpit take on the hate speech of talk media. We've had a flurry of concern over Mark Belling here in Milw because of racial slurs on the radio coupled with a half-baked apology that essentially said he should have come up with something meaner. If Bush would challenge that speech, perhaps it would change - and then start to change the tone of the debate. Both sides need work - Bush is in position to nudge one side, and a start may be all that is needed.

Agree completely. In addition I would add take public ownership of the culture that led to Abu Ghraib, root it out and eliminate it (through resignation, firing, prosecution or the like - but publically root it out).

I like your regime shake up quite a bit. I personally would hate to see Powell leave, but I do understand he may do so.

giulianni in 08?

I think I know where you're coming from, but I'm not sure I agree with this. I like the idea of bush taking on something the left has an interest in, and working (because it will be very hard work) to find a solid solution that leaves no one fully happy. What I don't want to see happen is a sort of tokenism thrown to the left that suggests pandering more than willingness to work to resolve differences. I'd even be happy with civil discussions where parties agree to disagree in the end - at least issues are aired honestly. Concession for concession sake alone I don't think is genuine. I also doubt you were going there with your comment t -

personally, a well orchestrated regime shake up might be all bush needs to really demonstrate to the left that he's serious about uniting.

nice summary. i'd love to see this work....
