So here's my beef -

I want some science teacher to stand up and explain that it is a theory - in the true scientific sense of the word.

That is, it is an explanation for a set of observations that cannot be proven true (a concept inherant in theory - theories can only be proven false). However, the theory can be tested. Said teacher asks the class to list the evidence in support of each theory - let the kids come to their own conclusions, but demands that the children support their conclusions with evidence from varied sources (one single point of evidence - such as biblical reference- is not considered a substantive test, in the scientific sense of the word).

Hopefully, when the kids are purposefully exposed to the fact that the diversity and preponderance of evidence supports the utility of evolution as the current theory explaining our existence - they will continue to generate good questions with which to test its scientific foundation.

In addition, I hope kids will be exposed to the understanding that varied theories exist and that their utility in explaining behavior is limited by the strength of their supporting evidence. Then, kids will be challenged to test, and question, and learn....

Evolution is not "proven" as the mechanism for our being -- however, it has the most utility as an explanation at the moment. When we really teach scientific thought - we will seriously develop critical thinkers.

Why be afraid of alternate theories being presented and debated? Are we so fearful that we can't approach a question of science with the rigor intended? Seems to me no one is interested in true discussion - but rather burial of contradictory testimony.
