hi pjk,
its sounds like you are enjoying your class....hey, have you come across the writings of Villagra....sort of a poet soldier who assisted Onate (yet sympathetic to indigenous peoples) in his forays into the New World (primarily in the environment here of New Mex . )his writings are considered to be the first formally written European reflections on NOrth America....maybe even first New World 'script' writing.

In responding I have to ask the same question here that you asked krz of this statement:>Yes, it's true. Villification. But it comes from a
>couple different places. First, I perceive through
>some of the rhetoric that it is notreally sincere but
>a cynical ploy to find yet another way of taking
>advantage of the poor through privatization.

as you asked krz:

Is it really so clear cut? I really don't know... I'm curious how you are so sure this will be case.

>the state (politicians) want to look past all the
>constants (poverty, substance abuse, etc.) that
>surround failing schools and blame teachers and hold
>schools accountable for things they have no control
>over. Great strides have been made by the government
>through free breakfast and lunch (big gov. democrat
>program!). I'm not saying that governments can cure
>all of societies ills... but blaming schools for them
>is not a solution.

I disagree with your reasoning here: I don't think that the state or politicians as you refer to them are blaming all of societies ills on the schools, rather schools and education are the one place that we as a culture have opened to advancement(according to democratic principles)...in terms of promoting cultural change there is really no better environment.

>Also, I believe there is some value to state
>intervention but also in the value of local control/
>meeting local needs and interests - that republican
>bedrock.

I have agreed with this, yet feel that educational goals within a state are not that different from county to county....and maybe shouldn't be....I remember the school board for espanola district visiting our classrooms....old boy party boss types telling me that writing was being able to write in cursive...essentially writing was penmanship and that's all I should be grading and teaching for. they couldn't even come close to the idea that writing is a way of expressing ideas etc. I really didn't want them to be telling me how to do anything! (of course only an anecdote)
