Hi Peter….I know what you mean about the state and condition that Speke is in now, compared to when we lived there. You have witnessed living in a clean community, devoid of graffiti, litter and foul language. Canada has been voted, several times, the best country in the world in which to live and with good cause. The particular area of British Columbia where you live is noted for its beauty and any comparison with the area of Speke Estate is just nonexistent.
The community pride, which once existed on the estate, seems to have disappeared and the children born to our generation seem to have inherited a third world community. I have lived in third world communities and some would put the Speke environment to shame.

Like you, I grew up on the estate and enjoyed everything that it had to offer. Speke supported one big family community, or so it seemed, to the people who lived there during the 50’s and 60’s. I consider Speke to be a part of my heritage and I now find myself apologising for the prevailing condition of the estate. When I am asked, “where did you used to live in Liverpool”, I have a tendency to mumble something about Speke.
As an example; All Saints church with a history spanning hundreds of years, is now covered with graffiti and protected with razor wire and CCTV cameras. This is the church where many of our generation were married, what an awful shame to see it in this condition now.

The Crescent shopping area, once a thriving retail community where you would have to join a queue to buy from any of the shops because they were so busy. Some of these shops are now protected by steel posts, entrenched deep into the ground, in an attempt to dissuade vehicles from ramming the shop fronts in potential burglary situations. What a way for the shop owners to make a living…..not easy.

I am advised that bus shelters in the Western, Central and Eastern Avenue areas have had the glass smashed by vandals, which causes many thousands of pounds in damage, because each shelter costs £5,000 when replacing the broken glass. Nobody sees anything, so the vandalism continues.

At last it seems that there may be a ray of hope in the eradication of crime in the area.
The new programme, “Shop a yob”, initiated by the Merseyside Police seems to have taken off in good style. Residents of Speke should use this facility for all its worth if they want to save their community from total decay.
