Speke in the early days -- Gillian, 14:32:24 09/30/09 Wed (84.68.236.54)
Hello,
I have been reading all the memories, seeing names I remember but can't put a face too so before I collaspe in floods of sentimental tears I thought I'd better write something.
My family moved to Speke 1950, from what they had moved from this was luxury. My sister Agnes told me about everything being new, hot running water, toilets inside, the only downside to this paradise was for a while was, it was a building site very very muddy. In time things changed but it was very much a community, groups and activities were formed, ok there wasn't enough schools but other arrangements were made. Something which was told to me not long ago, my Father much to the horror of my elder sisters started up ball room dancing classes(I am glad it didn't continue after I was born). Is there anyone out therewho went through this purgertry.
My memories of Speke are good ones, okay some bad things did happen but on the whole it was good. I remember going off to Oglate Shore in a gang, those poor people in the cottages where continually being harrassed all day and all summer long "please can we have a bottle of water". Oglate shore was our nearest bit of seaside that many of us saw. The fear of walking on to the sinking sand (mud) to disappear for ever, and of course we all knew someone that did. There was the orchard that was raided constantly. Okay we couldn't build sand castles but if the tide was in we could risk life and limb swimming about in the sewage.
Going a long the top towards the light house there was a drop which you would carefully slide down collecting graised and nettled legs and arms, but we done it time after time.
What about the mobile shops? O'connors, Barr's forgive me if I spell it wrong, "The Bewlies" with their annual sale of toffee apples. Poor Mr O'connor was for ever getting broken in to, I remember one night while we were playing around the van we heard noises inside so Mr O'Connor was summoned with Police side kicks to investigate. I don't know who the villains were but they were kids and terrified.
When all my brothers and sisters left home it was decided to move to Warrington in 1978. By that time Speke was not the place I knew. The flats that we lived in with their three floors of landings and stairs and from the begining had been brushed and scrubbed and neatly finished off with whiter than white edges and front door steps, became vandilised neglected and at time no go areas.
Even though my life and work was moving else where I can honestly say I left Speke with a heavy heart.
I live in the south of England and I have no remaining family in Speke but do have family in parts of Merseyside and Cheshire.
I visited All Hallows and spoke to Miss Short, that was a little time before it closed, she knew straight away who I was and asked if my sister Sylvia had learnt to behave herself. Sadly it was the last time I saw St Christophers Church, I was horrified to find it had been demolished. Does anyone know what happened to the time capsule with all the childrens names in side? From what I was told the parishoners bought a brick each, did any one get their brick back?
The last time I came to Speke was thre years ago when we where interning my brother Davids ashes in the family grave. I was quite shocked by the changes, I knew that the flats where I lived had been rebuilt in to houses, and the area of ground that I and my fiend John Morrishroe had dug up a lime pit, had been taken over by the houses where George Harrison lived. (I don't remember him but his Father was a miserable old bugger!!!
Standing on the road where I had kicked the can, played various games including knock and run? many opologies to my victims but I didn't do it on my own. I looked towards Ganworth and there was a new School, The park was no more, I remeber being chased out of the rose garden many times by a very angry gardner, our limit of not being chicken was walking on the bowling green.
It was very sad seeing so many changes but what I could see was a very determined effort to raise Speke from the ashes(excuse that pun).
I am sure there are still lots of the origional Speke people from the early years that will hopefully keep it all together. I will not forget Speke because I have too many good memories of friends schools and good times.
Best wishes
Gillian
Ps Please can any one tell me what the "labricks" or "lavricks where? I know it is where fords was built and there was lots of ponds.
Also what happened to St Christophers Statue?

- LINNER ROAD 1942/57 -- Ted Carew, 14:36:02 08/28/09 Fri (89.243.169.210)
I was 8 years old when we moved from norris green to 78 Linner Road in Speke.and started my new school at St Francis in Garston as there was no local schools (RC)in those days so i had a free bus pass and caught the 77 bus in Western Ave to Garston and back , Western Ave was the terminus then for the 77 80 81 and the crosville that came from Warrington then a bit later we had the 89 to St Helens. But it was the good times as a kid that i loved the best home from school grab a jam butty and get out with the lads and kick hell out out off a tennis ball playing footy in the street or cricket the wicket being the lamp post.
The days i talking about there were no houses built further up than Lovel Road and half of them where what we called then half houses (Bungalows now)there was no Stapleton Ave that was all trees ect!. Loads of wild life all around were the Ford factory is now we had the Labrador woods jezz you could get lost in them it was like a jungle.making a rope swing from the branch of a nice big oak.just befor we got there ,there was a pit we called the 15 foot loads of us in the summer (and they were summers then)used to skinny dip in there all lads of course lol sadly one of the lads drowned in it and for a long while we all stayed away he was a youhg amature boxer called Morris lived on Damwood Road other times as ppl have said we would walk over to the table bridge and collect train numbers them banks by the railway were teeming with Rabbits we had fun catching them
And we all had a good collection of birds eggs evev an ostrich egg one of the lads brothers brought back from abroad, and then in 1950 child hood finished and working life began. real good times to remember, oh i forgot the tanks we used to watch that were built in Milners (the standards factory ), going through there paces up and down the tank traps then later the German pow's filling them inand the planes built at rootes (the old dunlop factory)and take of and land at the old speke airport, thats it folks

- Speke walkabout -- Tom Ryder, 17:41:11 03/02/09 Mon (78.151.212.166)
Monday the 2nd Marcch being such a nice sunny day, I went for a walkabout Speke. I was looking to see if any changes had been made since my last visit to my old stompin ground....The last time I went walkabout I was disgusted with the way that Speke had run down and was in a state of disrepair from the Speke that I was brought up in. There was litter everywhere, houses were boarded up and some had no roofs. The place was a mess.
I was totally surprised to see how Speke had picked itself out of the gutter and was well on its way to joining a civilised society. I was hard pressed to find even a piece of litter on any of the streets that I walked down. I could not see any houses boarded up save for one, whic was for sale.
The old South Parade shopping center had gone, save for one or two shops and it had been replaced with a brand new shopping center with a good selection of goods to choose from. The old library located on Central Avenue was now a child care center and looked like it was being well used by the local mothers. There was a beautiful bright brand new library that was well stocked with books and seemed to be doing good business at 10am in the morning.
The shops at the bottom or top of Western Avenue had been spruced up a bit to conceal their decay. However I did find a lot of litter there on two of the side gardens. Mostly paper but one garden had an old broken pram under all the paper. That was the only bad portion of Speke that I could find. I walked down Allsaints Road, which is always a delight because the property in that area is always kept in such good condition...really nice area.
When I reached the church (All Saints) i was surprised to see the condition of the wooded area of the church property located at the bottom of Greyhound farm Road. This area when we were kids used to be a dense wooded area and all kinds of birds used to nest there. There used to be huge Horse Chestnut trees growing all through the woods but now there are very few bushes, the chestnut trees are long gone and the whole area is overgrown and littered. Surely the church have sufficient funding to clean this area up.How about the Boy Scouts or Guides, Brownies doing something for the church....it's not impossible and it is your church so why not clean that area up. I spent 10 or 20 minutes chatting with people who were attending grave sites of family and I think I made some new friends.
I went on to the Cresent shops and also found that this area had been cleaned up and most if not all the graffiti had been removed. Only three shops were open when I was there and a local lad was telling me..." De keep gettin cars pushed throught the front of dem don't de, so de closed der doors" No insentive for anyone to carry on a business under those conditions.
All in all I enjoyed my visit to Speke and it has certainly improved from the last time I was here. Well done Speke lovely to see.

Do you accept that Speke currently has sufficient facilities available for the younger generation. Are there sufficient activity programs, youth clubs, sports facilities and the like , located on the Speke estate. Would you like to see more and if so what type of facility do you believe to be lacking? Are there sufficient facilities available accommodating young married couples? Are there sufficient facilities available for the elderly? Are there sufficient policing services available to the estate?
Voice your thoughts about what you think Speke is lacking or how you would improve the estate.

- Home Speke Home -- Lynn, 16:37:15 02/03/09 Tue (82.42.197.45)
I grew up on Alderwood Ave,number 100, with my two sisters and two brothers. I went to St Ambrose School at the time of Sister Teresa and Mr. Lennon. Then followed on to All Hallows Girls with Miss Mullen. I can remember some of the shops on Alderwood. I remember the rent office which then became the Nieghbourhood Centre. We had man fun days in there, great little youth club, with many day out to Wales on a charra ha ha. Then there was the little food shop next to it. I remember stealing a packet of crips from there, didn't so it again, my mum dragged me back and made me say sorry, then I was given a good hiding for my trouble. I can remember the butchers, got many a chickens feet from there, we pulled the sinews and made the claws move, yukkkkkkkk. I can remember the barbers, the sweet shop with the post office which at the time was run by May Box. I can remember Cousins the bakers, the wool shop, the Launderette run by Joan at the time, she lived opposite. I think I can remember a shoe shop too. I know when I was a child everyone of those shops where open. If I can remember any more, I will add to this post, or if anyone else can fill in the blanks please do. I even remember the Cubs and Scoutes Hut on Greenway Road, I think it is still there, but not in use. I remember the church on Eastern Avenue, which now occupies an old folks home. I remember the big cross that once stood there. I remember the Cosville service and the 500 bus to Kirkby. I remember the ice cream freezers on a Saturday afternoon and watching the wrestling too. Big Daddy, Giant Haystacks, I was there watching with my dad. I remember the rag and bone man and looking for something to give him to get a fish or a balloon. I remember Bommy Night, standing gaurd with the lads, David Smith and Brian Crummy on the wasteground on the corner of Alderwood and Critchely Road. We used to seel gates and fences. The wasteground now has houses on it. We then moved to a freshly built Dymchurch Easate, where we lived for about four years. Many memories there, Speke Hall, first love (shame). I think my best days was when I lived on Alderwood. We moved up to Norris Green when I was about 15, but I came back to Speke when I was foolish enough to marry. After my divorce I went back to Norris Green where I lived for about eight years. Now I am glad to say that I am in my tenth year of being back in Speke and not likely to move again. Speke has it's good points as well as it's bad points, but I am home and here I will stay. Speke went downhill for a while, but I am glad to say that it is on the up with the new housing association and it's regeneration, what more could we ask for? It still has it's problems, but so has many areas, look at Norris Green, a once posh area, but now a slum. The housing is worse there than here. Give Norris Green it's due, it is trying to freshen the estate up and hopefully one day it will be back to it's former glory. Liverpool is a brill place to live and yes we do have problems, but we try and do our best to reslove these problems, it takes time and money. I am happy to say that now there are very few houses empty in Speke and apparently, there is a three year wait to get into Speke, so that is saying so much about the area, is it not?

What a great site. In fact a tremendous site. I lived in Speke 1950 to 1962. It was a fantastic place to grow up in. The Olde Hutte, Olde Hutte Lane and its humpback bridge, Oglet Shore, Hale Lighthouse, the Millwoods aka The Bluebell woods, the damwoods, Speke Hall, the gypsy camp by the airport close to Appledore and Dymchurch Roads. Everday was a day of exploration, the summers had sunshine, the winters snow and the autumns blackberry picking, fog and drizzle, the spring was daffodils from Finch Farm. Riding bikes down Oglet Lane and Dungeon Lane. the people eveyone knew someone and the district nurse coming around on her bike delivering babies, I believe her name was Nurse Rimmer. I could go on all night but my memories of Speke are so great I am writing a book 'I Come From Speke" so if anyone has anything to remind me off please send an EM.

I went to St Christophers infant/junior schools also to All Hallows being one of the first pupils to to attend both the junior and senior schools on the day they first openened. I can remember when the junior school was held in an annex by the infant school also a teacher called Mr Macabe teaching there as he lived near me in Conleach at the time.I remember playing on the field (which is now the shopping parade) after school and feeling safe also the several walks we had each year around the streets eg Whitsun.we lived also prior to Conleach in East millwood road and after Conleach in Lovell Way Does any one remember the youth club being held in St Christophers? or the youth dancers at Comp on Central Ave also the cake van that use to come around on a Satureday night and if i remember there was also a mobile sweet van about the size a a morris minor van. may I say that those memories can never be erased no matter how much Speke may change

Hi Everyone,
Good site - nice to see some pics from days gone by. I lived in Speke rom 1963 until 1984 and probably saw it decline rapidly from the mid 70s onwards. Got to say I had a great time growing up playing down the shore and in the woods. Does anyone from that period know of David Gordon or David Shore? We used to knock around as teenagers getting into trouble etc. etc.

Hi, I just wanted to ask two questions: Do any of you people who used to live in Speke, either know of, or did you yourselves ever work at the following places in the 1950s: DISTILLERS/PENICILLIN, EVANS MEDICAL, BEES SEEDS, OR E.R.SQUIBBS? if so, please get in touch, I would love to know if you knew my parents, Stan and Flo Shaw, or even myself, Pamela Shaw. Also, I see some people from All Saints Church have been in contact with each other, but does anybody remember the Speke Baptist church, it was a little wooden hut at the top of (was it Eastern, Western or Central Ave?) cant remember, but I used to get the 81 bus from Hunts Cross, and it went to the top of this road, there were some shops there, it was a terminus, and the church was a few yards away. Would love to hear from anyone who might remember this, also any of the following people. Milly, who had a brother Cliff, who married a twin, sorry can't remember there surname. Also, Billy and Peter Grainger, Judith Millett, Maureen Cook, who used to pal around with Rita Tushingham (the actress) or any of the Daley family, or anyone from Leafield Road, Hunts Cross. Thanks a lot Pam Benson, nee Shaw

I remember Ted Swain at Stocktonwood school, he taught us tech. drawing, he must have done something right because I ended up as an engineering draughtsman. Also P.J.Kellet who helped me a lot. before we all moved to Central Avenue some classes from Stocktonwood had to go to the extension near the Distillers factory up Woodend Ave. we used to do the usual boys hobby and train spot at the main line which ran alongside the school.
I worked at Dunlops from 1955 to 1961, I see it has all been knocked down and the magnificient sports field ruined. Played football and cricket there many times whilst at Dunlops.
Speke has changed, the Dove and Olive as well as the Pegasus have been knocked down!

I hope you dont mind me writing on the Speke page, but I lived in Leafield Road, Hunts Cross, but visited Speke often, so I am sure you will forgive me!!!
Just wondering if there is anyone out there who knew anybody from Hunts Cross between 1941 to 1956, when I was born to when I went to live in California. Some of the names of people who I would love to contact: BILLY AND PETER GRAINGER, JUDITH MILLETT, MARGARET AND VICTOR LAMONT, they are to name just a few, if anyone knows of the whereabouts of these people I would love to hear from you. Also, I used to attend Speke Baptist Church, when it was a little wooden hut at the end of (was it Eastern or Western Ave?) but would love to hear from anybody who attended that church then, there was a girl called Milly who had a brother called Cliff, but I cant recall there surname. I used to walk from Leafield Rd, over the bridge, past the dairy, and down to the old airport, many a time, I love visiting the airport, also, my Dad worked for Distillers/Penicillin at the time, anybody know anybody who worked there? Mum worked for Bees Seeds, on the corner of Fleming Road, Evans Medical Supplies, and E.R. Squibbs, again, if anybody knows of anybody who worked in these places would love to hear from them.. I went to Kingsthorne Road School before going on to Mosspits Lane, Olive Mount and Anfield Commercial College. Love to all scousers. Oh by the way, I now live in Corby, Northants

FLYING HIGH -- ROB TITCHEN, 05:48:57 03/03/07 Sat (86.133.171.157)
Hi Again
What a joy recently departing for the First time from Liverpool Airport. Having lived in Speke from the Age of 2 in 1953 and watching the airport develope. Original area consisted on the 'DAMWOODS. trees from Oglet lane, Now the start of the Runway. The woods was outlined towards Hale road with the Playing Field where Speke schools transfered the Pupils by Bus to the Then New changing Rooms. Many Sporting events took place with regular vcenues for football and Baseball teams. That was the Early 60's and all gone and fence with the new Airp[ort Boundary.
Ther used to be a little farm House cottage on the Grass verge at the top of Eastern Avenue oposite the Dove and Olive. Doe's anyone Reember It.??. Flying in over Speke lets you pick out the memories but sadley with Time and Changes not Mutch to see anymore.' I'M Glad that the days walk into Hale will newver Change and we thought we where in a different Country when we where kids. Does anyone Remember a Competition with # 'KELLOGS' CORNFLAKES; to win a Luxury Country Home. Well That HOUSE IS STILL THERE IN HALE on the Right hand side 3rd or 4th after the Hale garage on the Right. I've always wondered Who Won''
Changes will always be made but the Asmespere of Speke in those days is only a memory but GOOD memories from a clasic childhood.
Cheers Again Rob.

- Speke in the past -- Tom Ryder, 13:52:45 10/13/06 Fri (193.110.240.210)
Nice to see that some of the old Speke residents are finally agreeing with the statements that I made on this board several years ago.. At that time I mentioned that the Speke of today was nothing like the Speke I grew up in. Back in the 50's and 60's Speke was one big family and everyone knew each other by name. Your door was always open to neighbours and the kids of the times had great fun growing up in such a pleasant environment. There were no such thing as drugs, hoodies, and the terrible crimes of today. Of course there was trouble in some areas but it very seldom went beyond a punch on the nose. There were few muggings ...if any...and even fewer killings. I must admit that I never heard of a killing happening in Speke during the years that I lived there....1947 - 1970. Now it seems to be the norm.
The foul language of today was never used by the kids in public or they could have expected the hiding of their lives if their parents heard them.
When I first mentioned these points some years ago I was jumped on by the do gooders of Speke saying that I didn't know what I was talking about. Seems that the cycle has come full circle. Take a look at some of the very early posts on this board they still exist.
All the best to you all and I hope you keep returning to the site. I am always looking for info and stuff about Speke and Liverpool so if you have any news, pictures etc I would be glad to include them on the site
Regards
Tom Ryder

Hi Tom and gang,
We will be on the move soon (27 Oct) we are building a new house and need to rent for 5 or 6 months so I'm not paying for a fixed phone line in someone elses house for such a short time. ( though I may be able to use my mobile phone)When I'm back on line I will let you know and I will find some stuff for the site. I have some pix and function cards from my grandmother in the 50s including council identities and her as a police officer taken with a large group of others.
Best Wishes, Ian McDonnell

- The Parade -- Gill, 12:26:35 03/26/06 Sun (84.64.32.231)
The last time I visited Speke about three years ago, I couldn't be;ive the change. When I left Speke 1978 there were many flats direlict and the shops at either ends of Western and Eastern Ave were boarded up. I was giving my family a tour of Speke and I was gutted to see the shell of the library.
I can remember when the Parade was open and the shops and Banks, does anyone remember Woolworths?
Something that springs to mind there was a Oriental Fish and Chip shop the Hale Rd side of Eastern Ave. This takeaway was very popular at chucking out time in the pubs. My brothers and there friends one evening after spending a very boozy night in Hale decided to relieve the shop of its Bhuda. Often my brothers would bring there friends back to our flat to continue partying. The Bhudda they borrowed ended tucked up in my Dads bed. My Father being Catholic was furious.
The shops on the Parade changed quite often but the ones I remeber are; Waterworths,The newsagents Bembrose I think that was its name. Ethel Austin. Pegrams,Chip shop, TV rental x2(I worked for one)Sayers, Cousins, Scots, TSB, VG Stores, two other green grocers, two off licences.
Lets hope the regeneration of Speke will help to establish the things that Speke has lost.

- The Good Old Days -- Peter Crompton, 23:39:49 12/15/03 Mon (24.244.42.70)
I lived in Speke,on Greyhound Farm Rd,1940-1958,after getting married moved to Garston then Aigburth, have been in Canada since 1965,have been back many times last in 2001.
We had plenty of open space to spend our days, which as slowly gone from the Speke area,I remember the sod fights we had on the Table Bridge, this Bridge had a Gun mount on it from the War,we would split up into two groups one defending the other attacking, hurling sod at one another, many a black eye and bloody noses, but it was all in fun.On Greyhound we had Midget Cricket Test matches, each on of us would represent a Country,Whittle our own little bats, using a marble as the ball, wickets out of lolly pop sticks,we would play the same hours as the proper tests,we all had holes in our pants after.
Yes Oglet Shore and the Dam woods were great play grounds, were the old Lockheed factory used to be was all open Fields. Those corn fields could tell some stories I know. Maybe in 2004 I will try to write more about those times 1943-1953 Take care,I would love to hear from anyone who remembers me

Why have they changed Speke!!! -- Angie Barton, 14:57:11 12/09/03 Tue (195.93.33.14)
I cannot believe it! Not only have they knocked down Speke Comprehensive, but they are, or have got rid of the old shopping parade....How sad, I would love to get my hand on those idiots in the council whom proposed this!
Speke comp, was big and adequate enough to deal with the demands of the Speke area! Why waste valuable money and buile a 'New' school?? What a waste of money! That place, the 'Parade' shopping centre was the heart of Speke sounds like they have ripped the heart out of Speke!!!
I have so many childhood memories of the place and love it dearly but these planner's want dumping on a desert island! and left to do their damage their....How sad. I am angry and saddened by hearing of all these changes to a great place.
We had a huge Youth club with sports hall and swimming baths god help us they don't get their hands on that!!!
Has All saint's church been left! Or have they bulldozed that as well??? That was a lovely church! I can't believe they are masacaring speke!! Literally...
Suppose the Library has gone....And you call this progress?
You can keep it!

- Speke Memories -- Vinny Edwards, 14:38:24 12/09/03 Tue (213.122.121.23)
I read with great enjoyment the memories written by Ken Savage. Thanks Ken.
Oglet Shore also holds many fond memories for me ….it is unrecognisable today to the place I knew as a kid .
Does anybody remember the great big giant triangular concrete blocks that scattered the shoreline near the wall...? we used to believe that they were tank-traps left over from the war….does anyone know if this was true..? In fact does anyone know why the wall was there…was it an old wharf in days gone by..? I know Garston docks were not far away to the right as you used to walk down to the shoreline .
As kids we used to wander down Oglet lane and go egging along the pathway that used to run behind and under the runway lights up to the back of the Dove and Olive…we used to get Thrush , Blackbird , Linnets and Chaffinch eggs down there for our collections…we also used to wander up and down Bailey’s Lane …looking at the houses there and wondering what it’d be like to be so rich that you could afford to live there . I remember the farmers fields down the side of and behind the Dove and Olive…there was a big field and then there was a garden nursery on the far side of it . I remember getting caught egging in there once and the guys who worked there caught us and threatened to call the police…but then decided to let us go…it makes me laugh now when I remember how scared we were with the threat of the police being called …kids don’t seem fazed by that sort of threat these days do they .?
Remember the two little cottages where the road divided to go down towards the back of the airport runways ..? to the farm that lay down there…there was I think a dog kennels as we always used to hear lots of dogs barking down there…
The best fun we had down Oglet Shore though was riding our bikes down the hills from the top level down towards where the wall is…we used to get up to some speeds…it’s a sign of the times I guess but the last time I went there in 2001 there where kids of the same age riding motorbikes up and down those hills…when I told them we used to ride our “ Raleigh Choppers” down them same hills , they laughed and said we where mad…!!
I remember once my mum and Aunt taking us down to the Oglet beach one summer when we about six years old and us sitting on the ‘beach” it was a blazing hot day and I remember me mum rubbing suntan lotion into our backs….but she would’nt let us go in the water because it was so dirty.
Does anybody remember the marshland that used to run parallel to the runways..?…we would spend long summer days in the ponds with little fishing nets trying to catch newts and sticklebacks or egging for birds eggs . Even swimming in the deeper water holes when it was hot enough .

- Speke now -- Rev Carol . Kidd, 09:42:22 02/16/03 Sun (80.40.42.206)
I find the comments made about Speke more than a little sad. Thearea under went a great down turn when the major employers closed down or reduced staff. The current picture is up. W are having much physical improvement to houses and factories plus 3 new schools, a new library and shopping centre.
Yes the area has suffered from vandalism etc. but so has every area in the UK it is a major problem not limited to Speke.
The question of the church and its'opening is of course of particular concern to me. speke All Saints has only been open during services since the 1950's so this is not a new phenomenon. In fact our insurers, incommon with all churches that do not have permanent staff on duty, require us to be locked . Even St Peter's inWoolton is locked.
With reguard to the graffti it is something we cannopt remove without damaging the sandstone, so nature has to take its course. No we do not like it but alas that's the way it is. It would have been good to have heard about a well kept graveyard and a well repaierd and cared for church. Some £130,000 hase been spent on the building in the last four years every penny found locally or from charities.
YEs we have had to protect the low roofs in order that they do not get damaged by children climbing on them. But there is no razor wire; it is done with proper vandal protection.
We have also spent £15,000 on the woodland around the church, again found by us as will be the moneyt o do up the old school now the church hall. We work hard to be the people of God in Speke alongside all others who worship here.
Please do not talk Speke down, rather talk of the good things and raise peoples esteem. For most folk i speke are wonderful and do a good job of being good neighbours and friends.
Please when you come again call at the vicarage and I'll take you to see the good things, renovated houses, in the main estate and in Dymchurch, examples of caring that goes the extra mile. YOu may find that things have changed, they have and are changing again to make Speke an even better place to live. Oh by the way I choose to livehere, and I enjoy doing so.
Carol

As you often put your link in my Guestbook, Tom (http:www.moneypennyl.freeserve.co.uk/index.htm) I thought it was time I came to see your site for the second time. I am surprised you have continued to build it because your initial comments to me about Speke where so awful, and I was so hurt, I have never replied to you since, despite your numerous messages. In contrast, I hope you will consider my message polite and respectful.
Your opinion of the area in your email to me last year was insulting to those of us who stayed here, and who continue to work on improving it. The houses that are boarded up in Speke Garston are renovated before they are boarded up and are ready for occupation when a tenant requests one. The housing company that now owns the stock and has local residents on it's Board, has implemented an excellent home improvement plan which so far has given me double glazing, central heating, cavity wall insulation, a new roof, loft insulation and all my repairs completed in one day. In the next month my kitchen and bathroom will be gutted and renewed with my choice of units, and the electrics will be completely renewed. The cost to me? £2.00 a week on my £50 rent! South Liverpool Housing doesn't just work on it's stock, but is involved in many local projects and offers grants to those wanting to better themselves or their business in Speke Garston, including sponsorship for one young lad who wanted to work towards the next Olympics.
A new superstore is being built in the centre of Speke, with smaller shops moving in from the old Parade, which will become the sports fields for the new Parklands High school, (replacing Speke Comp which was falling down). It has just opened beside the new library, new Leeson Centre, new LCC One Stop Shop, new Community Centre, refurbished Austin Rawlinson and sports centre, new theatre etc etc. The people of Speke have worked long and hard to get to this stage, and we are reaping the benefits of those efforts.
I also remember your insults about my beloved All Saints Church, which were insensitive to say the least considering my 42 year commitment to the place, and the fact that I am the Churchwarden! Small though we are, we also play a big part in our local community, funding a Community Development Worker to help make things better. What’s a bit of graffiti compared to getting a new primary school, health centre and shops built? That's what the people of West Speke are working on now. I am sorry that you felt too ashamed of the Church to show it to your family, but maybe if you had come while a service was on and met us, your opinion would have changed. A church is not a building; rather the people who use it.
As someone who lives so far away, visits only occasionally, and doesn't even like the place, I am surprised that you have an interest in Speke and wonder why you have continued with this site. Having read your replies to Peter Crompton and Lisa, I see your opinion hasn't changed. To quote one sentence of your email to me: ‘Speke is a terrible place to live and it lives up to its reputation.‘ your site has some very good contents and is very professionally run but is spoiled by these negative comments.
I am not asking you to cover up the bad points but to acknowledge the good ones. Maybe the reason so many houses are boarded up in Speke is because people moved away and didn't stay to make it better, as we are doing now. It is everybody’s right to choose to move away of course, but they then lost the right to criticize.
We all know the bad points! But it’s not bad coverage that gets things improved as you said to Lisa; it’s people living and working together with faith in themselves, a hope for the future, and a resolve never to give up!

i would just like to say how dissapointed i am at the way your site is trying to portray speke as it is now.
i grew up in speke and like any other town it has a few boarded up houses.
the pictures that you have for speke now have been blown totally out of context.
most of the pictures are of the same place but taken at different angles.
your website is totally out of order
