Subject: Speke in the past

Nice to see that some of the old Speke residents are finally agreeing with the statements that I made on this board several years ago.. At that time I mentioned that the Speke of today was nothing like the Speke I grew up in. Back in the 50's and 60's Speke was one big family and everyone knew each other by name. Your door was always open to neighbours and the kids of the times had great fun growing up in such a pleasant environment. There were no such thing as drugs, hoodies, and the terrible crimes of today. Of course there was trouble in some areas but it very seldom went beyond a punch on the nose. There were few muggings ...if any...and even fewer killings. I must admit that I never heard of a killing happening in Speke during the years that I lived there....1947 - 1970. Now it seems to be the norm.
The foul language of today was never used by the kids in public or they could have expected the hiding of their lives if their parents heard them.

When I first mentioned these points some years ago I was jumped on by the do gooders of Speke saying that I didn't know what I was talking about. Seems that the cycle has come full circle. Take a look at some of the very early posts on this board they still exist.
All the best to you all and I hope you keep returning to the site. I am always looking for info and stuff about Speke and Liverpool so if you have any news, pictures etc I would be glad to include them on the site

Regards
Tom Ryder

i was born in stapleton avenue speke in the flats oppite the old park, your right about leaving your front door open the neighbours all looked out for one another and they would all help each other out they were always skint but no one went hungry.as a teenager iwould hang around the corners with boys and girls if we where making to much noise the man of the house would come out and ask us to keep the noise down we dersent answer them back as you would get a clip around the earhole, but we had respect for our elders, try that today and you dont no what will happen.as for gangs we had rivarly gangs on different corners and yes they would fight but as you said with there fists not wepons, and it would be one on one not half a dozen or more on one.i had the best years of my life growing up in speke and lovely memories, in the flats all the kids would get together and we would have a game of rounders against the mums and dads, can you see the mums and dads of today doing that i think not speke will never ever be the same sad to say.
