Subject: I come from Speke

What a great site. In fact a tremendous site. I lived in Speke 1950 to 1962. It was a fantastic place to grow up in. The Olde Hutte, Olde Hutte Lane and its humpback bridge, Oglet Shore, Hale Lighthouse, the Millwoods aka The Bluebell woods, the damwoods, Speke Hall, the gypsy camp by the airport close to Appledore and Dymchurch Roads. Everday was a day of exploration, the summers had sunshine, the winters snow and the autumns blackberry picking, fog and drizzle, the spring was daffodils from Finch Farm. Riding bikes down Oglet Lane and Dungeon Lane. the people eveyone knew someone and the district nurse coming around on her bike delivering babies, I believe her name was Nurse Rimmer. I could go on all night but my memories of Speke are so great I am writing a book 'I Come From Speke" so if anyone has anything to remind me off please send an EM.

I too remember the Speke you describe. I was born in 1950 and lived at Tarbock Road until 1968 when I went down to the midlands to train as a PE teacher. I finally left in 1986 but have some very good memories and a few less so.

Remember the air show at Speke airport 1n 1956 when a Frenchman tried to fly and fell to his death.

Remember the plane that crashed on Mothaks killing a number of people round about 1964.

I remember the summer "garden parties" they used to put on on St Christophers school field with all kinds of stalls at which to spend your money and entertainment such as the Morris dancing and the Woodcutters band. Ah happy days.

May I please share some of my (now vague!) memories of Speke with everybody.I was born in 108 Linner Road,in 1958,my dad working at Dunlops at the time. The midwife had to clean the bits of car tyre off the bed before I made my appearance into the world!. Apparently the midwife should have been Paul Mcartney's mum ? but she was not on call at the time. Moved to 86 Lovel Road later on and moved to Runcorn in 1973. Memories include many hours spent down Oglet Lane, running to see the Viscount tail sticking out of Mothaks roof, mobile sweet van a blue Austin I think. Also spending every school holiday on the airport viewing balcony with my butties and radio listening to the pilots on approach.I wish I had had a camera at the time.Airshow at the airport when we went up in a BAC-111 FOR A £1! Went to Stocktonwood and then Speke comp.Remember it being very cold with my shorts on,but I did have a balaclava! Dad then went on the buses and I had many many trips with him back and to the Pierhead on the 82c. Now living in sunny North Wales. Will try to remember some more and some names soon.Regards,Don.

Hi, Nice to read people's memories of Speke. I went to Millwood C.P. and Stapleton Avenue Schools. I have fond memories of living in Eastern Avenue and playing football outside the Dove & Olive Pub, Walking to Oglet Shore with my parents and catching tadpoles and stickleback fish from the farmer's pond. I remember shopping with my parents at alderwood avenue, the parade and the crescent, sadly some of these places are now derelict. I used to Play D.J. at St. christophers youth club (the Haven)on monday evenings and we had some great times. My father worked at the Dunlop Factory, My mother at Berties grocery store and my elder sister worked at Evans Medical Factory.
