John A. Scudero For Mayor of Metlakatla
Hello, my name is John Scudero, I am proud of the fact that my ancestors were one of the first people who settle and labored under harsh conditions, to create and build Metlakatla to what it is today. It was the original Metlakatlan pioneers working together with respect for each other, that we have what we have today. One of the most important duty of being Mayor is to be available to listen to the voices of the Metlakatlans, for all decisions must come from the people, and I promise you, That if elected Mayor, I WILL LISTEN TO YOU.
This reservation government was created in its present form in August 23, 1944, by the approval of the Constitution and By-Laws of the Metlakatla Indian Community, Annette Islands Reserve. In this document, the preamble states,
“Whereas, by the act of March 3, 1891, the Congress of the United States set apart the lands known as Annette Islands for the use and occupancy of the Metlakatla Indians and other natives of Alaska who might be permitted to join them;”
What this means, is that these Islands belongs to all of us, not to the Council . I feel that the most important resources that we have, is our Members, as such, It is the Members right to decide on major decision that effect our life’s. I will strive to implement that with respect to all our Members in the daily operation of the Mayors Office if elected.
In this constitution and by-laws of the Metlakatla Indian Community, Annette Islands Reserve in;
“ARTICLE VI-OCCUPANCY OF LAND
SECTION 2. The Council is authorized to issue similar permits for the occupancy and use of such tracts of land, other than mineral land, on Annette Islands as are cultivable to any member of the Community who may be willing to clear and cultivate the same; not more than 10 acres of such land shall be assigned to any one person.”
I promise to work with the Members and Council, to implementing this to the advantage of the Members, I feel that this is an untapped resources that we have not considered in the economic development of our Islands.
