I don't understand why you think firing John was such an assault on democracy. He was only one elected official while council and the other executives amount to 14 elected officials (who all agreed he over stepped his authority and was out of control). They saw a bad situation which if allowed to continue would have irreparably harmed our community and took action under the constitution by (democratically) voting him out to protect the community (what they swore an oath to do). They put a stop to the facist state John tried to impose where everyone had to jump at his command and he could hire and fire at his will without regard to policy, regulations, laws or qualifications. If you read the constitution it gives the real power to the council and not the mayor so no one person can do what John attempted.
