CyberM & Octopus Contribute to Easier School Life

Hong Kong, 17 July 2001

CyberM International (Holdings) Ltd (CyberM) and Creative Star Limited (the card issuer of Octopus) has jointly launched the "SchoolPlus Scheme", a cybermoney campus payment system that further extends the use of the Octopus card to provide a solid platform for intelligent campus management in primary and secondary schools.

Committed to bringing the benefits of information technology into the school campus, CyberM has since 1998 been designing tuck shop management systems for tuck shops in schools. With the full support of Vitaland Services Ltd., a subsidiary of Vitasoy International Holdings Ltd, CyberM has, within two years, installed its management system in over 130 schools, with the student patronage exceeding 140,000.

In June 2000, CyberM started to accommodate the use of the Octopus card in its tuck shops in primary and secondary schools. To date, 110 schools have installed Octopus readers to enable payment with eMoney. With each tuck shop originally handling over 300 bills a month, CyberM saves the cost of handling a total of over 40,000 bills a month, not to mention the enormous amount of time spent in making cash changes. Meanwhile, the system also saves the students' queuing time by 60%.

To provide for quality campus services that go beyond payment systems, CyberM is working with Octopus to launch the "SchoolPlus Scheme" to extend the application of Octopus technology with an aim to make the Octopus card a multi-functional smart campus card. Not only can students use the Octopus to commute to the school, they can also use their cards to take attendance at the school, to buy food, and even to loan books from the library. Ultimately, the CyberM Campus System will incorporate a host of other functions for the benefit of teachers and students alike.

CyberM Chairman and Managing Director Mr Duncan Lau said, "To us, raising the quality of campus life for the 1.5 million primary and secondary students is of paramount importance. The "SchoolPlus Scheme" not only enhances the administrative efficiency in schools, but it also contributes to the building of a "Cashless" environment which provides security to students and reduces queuing time for making cash payments."

The SchoolPlus Scheme was first introduced to HKTA Ching Chung Secondary School in July this year. According to plan, over 100 schools will join the scheme in the coming year.

"We plan to make this smart card a mark of personal identity, enabling borrowing of books, collection of miscellaneous payments, loaning of various campus facilities and equipment, and even the enrolment for various activities. On the other hand, the system will also create in students a greater sense of belonging to the school," said Mr Lau.

"The 'School Plus Scheme' is an exciting project which introduces various Octopus' applications in the school environment, with the ultimate aim of making school life easier" said Mr Rob Noble, Chief Executive Director of Creative Star. He added that "the School Plus Scheme promises benefits for all parties. Octopus tuck shops and kiosks provide students and teachers with a fast, convenient and coin-free payment method. Parents need not worry about their children bringing too much cash to school. The tuck shop operator can handle more traffic and handle less coins. Schools are able to efficiently and accurately record students' attendance, with reduced administration work."

At the media conference held at HKTA Ching Chung Secondary School on 17 July, CyberM Holdings and Octopus representatives introduced the concept and the detailed arrangements of the SchoolPlus Scheme. They toured around the school, where the students demonstrated the various functions of the System. It is expected that the project will be extended to other primary and secondary schools starting from July 2001.
