PRESS RELEASE

LOAD OF PROTON CARD VIA MOBILE PHONE DEMONSTRATED.

IMPORTANT DEVELOPMENT USING GEMPLUS CARDS AND

PROTON TECHNOLOGY

Brussels, Belgium and Gemenos, France, 10 May 1999: Proton World and Gemplus jointly

announced today that they had successfully loaded value onto a Proton card using a mobile

phone. The Proton card was loaded using dual-slot mobile phone handsets over the Belgian

operator Mobistar’s network.

This development has major implications for the integration of mobile phone and smart card

technologies. Initially this represents another means of loading value, in addition to using a load

terminal, an ATM, a smart phone, a payphone or a card reader connected to an internet PC,

which represents added convenience for cardholders. Proton World’s licensees’ experience so

far gives strong evidence that the easier it is to load value onto cards, the more frequently

cardholders will use them. In the medium to long term, forecasters anticipate that mobile

phones will become a significantly-important means of accessing the Internet and other mobile

commerce applications, and so Proton cardholders will be able to perform secure transactions

using their cards and their mobile phones.
