ePSO-Newsletter – No. 6 – March 2001

http://epso.jrc.es/newsletter/vol06/docs/ePSO-N.pdf
Edy: Sony has started a joint venture to promote an electronic purse, based on its Felica

card. It will be branded as Edy. Sony Corporation and Sony Finance will have a 47 percent

stake in the venture, smaller stakes will be held by the telecoms NTT DoCoMo and

KDDI, and by Toyota. The Sakura, Sanwa and Tokyo-Mitsubishi banks will participate as

well. The Denso Corporation is also among the partners and will participate in the production

of reader/writers. The Edy card is to be deployed later this year. It has an inductive

interface. Currently, it is being tested in the Gatecity shopping centre in the Ohsaki

area of Tokyo. Here, a pendant with the chip and coil in it, to be worn around the neck,

can be used instead of the card. It is of similar size to the watches sold in Hong Kong.

In the rollout, planned for October 2001, purse payments will be possible at vending

machines and convenience stores. Payments on the Internet and in mobile commerce are

also foreseen. 30 million users, 25,000 real outlets, 30,000 cyber outlets, 1 million vending

machines and 15 million personal terminals are to be deployed within 5 years.

Matsushita (Panasonic) plans to test a system based on the Felica card and mobile

phones in the underground railway of Sapporo. It is not yet known whether the Felica

coil and chip will be put into phones, or whether there will be a reader/writer in phones,

or whether both options will be tested.

Suica: Also during this year, the East Japan Railway Company (JR East), which operates

in the Tokyo area and to the East of it, will introduce Felica for fast verification of season

tickets, and for payment of single tickets. As JR East intends to keep its gates, it will use

the "touch-and-go" principle of card usage. This leads to the requirement of having a

transaction processed in 200 ms. This scheme is nicknamed Suica.
