Here's a shot
Example, the antebellum slave period. We now can make some ammends by writing about what happened and remember what a terrible thing it was. It is one way of memorializing those who suffered through it. Learning from history's past is the only way we can correct future problems and we must remeber events like that so nothing like it happens again. So yes, we do make ammends for past events by writing about them historically. I hope that is what you were looking for.

That is just what i had in mind. I think it is pretty sad that the government has done some horrible things in the past, such as the treatment of Native Americans. But in other countries ie. USSR or Nazi Germany, the history might not be recored as it truely was. At least we have made some adments for our crimes and at least are taught what was done and can be outraged by it. And thus avoid it in the future.
