Hey Shawn, I spent 10 years active in the Brookside/Jr HS PTO's and have held many chairs including President. I'll try to answer your questions best that I can.The PTO is a parent/teacher organization of that building. Each org. has it's own set of by-laws set up by voting members. By-law changes require posting of vote in the form of a newsletter to all members. Most meetings are run under Robert's Rules with an agenda. Minutes are taken and approved at every meeting. Requirements are that you must be a parent/guardian of a child attending that school building. A membership fee of approx. $3-$5 for the school year covers the family (adults). Regardless of the childs age if he/she attends that school you may be a member. Only paid members have voting privileges. Teachers are invited to join the membership but administration are invited guests. PTO's do run under their own 501c tax id number.

The purpose of the PTO is to provide an informational forum for parents within the building. Also, they provide those enrichment and social programs that schools do not have time or money to provide. They help provide for a well rounded student.

Hope this has answered your questions.
