Exodus at Cov as reserves move on. (CET Jan 13 2004)

Back row forward Tristan Prosser-Shaw has signed for Nuneaton after being released by Coventry and made his debut in the second team’s win over Manor Park last Saturday.

Prosser-Shaw, who was unable to command a regular place after joining Cov from Rugby Lions at the end of last season, is one of a number of players moving out of Coundon Road in the wake of the National Division One club’s recent recruitment drive in a bid to arrest their poor run.

Scrum-half Toby Handley registered with Rugby Lions in time to figure in Saturday’s league win over Moseley, while Tim Stannard - who has been on loan at Lions for the last two months and played last weekend - is now serving out his term of notice.

South African prop Pierre Du Toit has moved on to Exeter after just one appearance for Cov, in their defeat at Worcester two weeks ago, and backs James Black and Roman Piotrowski have also been released.

Former Worcester and Gwent Dragons lock Martin Morgan has not been retained after the end if his month’s trial following the arrival of Italian international Mark Giacheri and has signed for Penzance & Newlyn.

Du Toit has been replaced by the vastly experienced 34-year-old tight head Adrian Olver, who has arrived on loan from Worcester.

Olver has played Premiership rugby for Bedford, Saracens, Harlequins and Rotherham, and is with Cov for a month after which the situation will be reviewed.

Back-five forward Richard Stott, another summer recruit, has gone out on loan to Midlands Two West side Kenilworth while lock Dave Campton is remaining on loan at Rugby Lions.

“Basically it’s to make sure they are playing games,” said Cov’s general manager Graham Robbins. “It’s unfair on anyone to have them on the touchline for weeks and then call them into the first team and expect them to be match fit. No amount of training that they do can make up for taking tackles in a competitive match situation.”

Cov are at home to Exeter on Saturday and Robbins is adamant that spirits are high despite last week’s 51-9 mauling at Plymouth Albion.

“That was a bedding-in result and we are putting a lot of faith into the side we have now,” he said. “We are looking to build with this squad for next season at the new stadium apart from improving our present position.”

Handley will be linking up with former Cov teammate Alan Mitchell at Rugby Lions.

Mitchell, who left Cov for Henley at the end of last season, trained at Webb Ellis Road last week with a view to completing a move in time for this weekend’s game at Nottingham.

ProsserShaw could be in the running for a place in Nuneaton’s squad to play at Rosslyn Park on Saturday.

“He will be a good asset for us for the rest of the season and hopefully into next season as well,” said Nuneaton’s team manager Paul Vowles. “If nothing else he will keep everyone else on their toes,

“He wants to be playing rugby and it hasn’t been happening for him this season.”

Ulster will train at Nuneaton’s Liberty Way ground on Friday afternoon in preperation for this weekend’s Heineken Cup pool game against Leicester Tigers at Welford Road.
