Kate, what you say here reminds me so vividly of Holly's generative metamodel. Where level one is the duality in which we become so polarized; level two is where we move to seeing that there are other ways of looking at the issue and level three is where we embrace the possibility that there are many many ways of holding these things. Each level includes and embraces the levels below it, thus excluding none of who we are.

Using this model we can see that polarized discussions can be useful as long as we are willing to move beyond them. Willing to perhaps move off our own position to enable others to do the same. If we get stuck in polarity sometimes there may be no point in going on. Discerning when this is happening, seems to me to be an important part of any discussion.

I don't think this happened in our discussion and it feels like we came to some sort of understanding in the end. Polarized positions were useful along the way for it is always vital to air them and let them be heard in the company of others. Otherwise, as you say, they become silent barriers that never get exposed to the transforming power of Consciousness.

So here's to mutuality, messy and difficult as it may be, it seems to me to be the best we can do at this point.
