we ARE America.
we ARE all that it has added and all that it has subtracted.
we ARE its greatnesses (and there are many)
and we ARE its dark side (of which there is a lot)
America is not something that we have found
ourselves within, subjected to, or a victim of.
George Bush is Us just as
Bill Clinton is Us just as
George and Abraham and Teddy and Franklin and John
are Us (and many more)
We are Al Bundy
We are the children playing soccer on Saturday mornings
We are the SUVs we drive around and
we are the starving malnourished and unloved children
who cry among us
we are the computers and the technology that allows us to be together
we are the ones who have bailed out large chunks of the world from totalitarianism, several times, at the cost of countless lives and yes
we are the ones who have inflicted much grief and pain on others under the banner of our ideals and our self interests
this is who I am, a massive part of my embodinent
today, all this week, and for months before i have flown the flag in front of my house
how can i say i am not this?
how can i not be embroiled in the great movement that is this place that is me that is us
how can i run and hide from what i am?
america is me

(at this point the march music kicks is, my hand is over my heart, a tear is in my eye)

this is where i live, as part of a global community and as what i am i seek to find a way through the balance of what i must be as america and what it stands for and of how this place i am can more maturely and skillfully hold this world that i find myself within (which can, by the way, be a fairly nasty place)

we are the anger of this nation
we are the anger of the world
we are the hope of this nation
we are the hope of the world
we are the fear of this nation and
we are the fear of this world

there is none of this that we are not
we are not victims in this
we are the entire act itself
and as this moves forward in its unknowable way
we are that as well
part of me wants Bin Laden's head on a platter
and that head is my head, whether I like it or not

I am America
